Treadmill running how much?

I have made good progress in the past 9 months since I resumed training after years of inactivity and im now happy with my size and do not wish to put on any more muscle so don’t need to bulk up further as im in proportion. I have a very small bone structure 6.5 inch wrists and always went for the Zane look Currently aged 45 I have 44 Inch Chest, 16 Inch Arms, 24 thighs, 16 1/4 Inch calves, 32 Waist.
I used to have a 27 inch waist back in the 80s but I think I have No Hope and Bob hope of ever getting back to that lol id be very happy with a 30 inch waist.
I need advice about my treadmill running I currently run after each workout for 10 mins at 6 MPH so I do 1 mile three times per week. I don’t want to kill my strength with the weights could I up it to 12 mins or 15 min What do you guys do? I don’t want to overdo it but I want to burn of some fat and keep my heart healthy as im heading toward the big 50.

I take three days off a week, but use those days for the tread mill, 45mins a day, works well for me, first thing in the morning before i eat..

Thanks for the reply Matt. Do you run or walk for 45 mins and what kind of speeds ? I’ve been told that running that much would zap my strength.

I run the full 45mins, not sure what speed, although its not by any means a sprint, but fast enough to keep my heart rate high. Ive never found that is zaps my strehght..

hey would it be allright to combine cardio and weightlifting on the same day. do cardio right after lifting. or would it slow my growing process. Ive read on bodybuilding mags that its good to run after lifting. or should i just separate them. thanks.

If your feeling frisky on some cardio days, you can substitue them for sprints. Outddors is easier than treamill. Don't ever do it more than twice a week tops however, as this will zap strength if your a hardgainer, but this will deff. help with fat loss. Just do like 10 sprints followed by short breaks in between. Sprint about 10-15 seconds or more if you can handle it, as hard as you can.

I think I missed something :biglaugh:

Why does sprinting more than twice a week zap strength for hardgainers? and How does it zap it?

It more than likely does for skinier atheletes because it's a heavy strain on the system. All out sprints main source of fuel comes from the fuel, in the form of glucose, that is the main form of fuel for working muscles during intense excercise. So when you do to much spint work during the course of the week, as a bodybuilder trying to maintain his muscle strength, and mass, it can effect it negatively, because your effectively depleteing glycogen(and fat), and your body starts to catabolize muscle tissue as a result.

Intense sprinting sessions are hard on the body, and most people are under the wrong impression of how much their bodies can take before they begin to become depleted. How much varies from person to person however.

Just read the HIIT article in the fat loss section. It says to start of w/ no more than 1 session, and build up to 3-4 tops. I wouldn't want to tell somebody to overdo anything.
