Triggey, I would normally agree with you. But this is in the fatloss forum, so I'm going with the assumption that JP wants to focus on fatloss here.

JP, going along with what triggey said, lifting wieghts burns cals too. So I would definately suggest you start wieght training if your not already. Look through the articles posted here. "how to cut" should be a good basis for what you want to do.

hehe, oh yea we ARE in the weight loss forum, my bad. i saw in another topic that JP is only 11 years old. weight lifting may not be for you yet, so the best advice would be to go with what the other more experienced users on this forum would have to say about that. my guess is that you have an endomorphic body (ectomorph are the "skinny as a rail" people, mesomorph bodies can gain a moderate amount of fat and lose a moderate amount of fat; same with muscle, and the endomorph packs on the pounds very fast due to the lowest metabolism)

at 11 years old and having access to a computer, my advice would be to do mostly bodyweight exercises, cardio, learning the correct diet, and research all you can about training for an endomorphic body.

The iron is the great reference point, the all-knowing perspective giver. Always there like a beacon in the pitch black. I have found the iron to be my greatest friend. It never freaks out on me, never runs. Friends come and go, but 200 pounds is always 200 pounds."

Here is my take as a parent.

I have no doubt that you have a legitimate concern about being overweight. There is, after all, an epedimic of overweight children (forgive me for saying children but I can't call you a teen, can I?). However the idea of an 11 year old "dieting" disturbs me and I almost wish I could see pictures of you to give you an objective opinion since there is also an epidemic of distorted body images for children....before anyone accuses me of being to "sensitive" I will mention that my 4 YEAR OLD son, just the other day, asked his mother "does this make me look fat?" upon trying on a coat the other day. That shit is DISTURBING.

I also believe that at 11 years old it is TOO EARLY to start calling yourself an endomorph, mesomorph or any other morph...just as likely that you have simply not learned good eating habits and metabolism is a function of diet and activity level as well as gentics, not to mention those androgens I mentioned earlier. In fact, what you do during puberty can have a GREAT effect of where your body ends up wanting to be later on in life.

What an 11 year old should be doing is getting out and MOVING. Running around. Playing. Sports, tag, whatever. Get out from in front of the frigging computer, the video games if you play them, the TV...get off your ass and be a kid instead of a zombie. Find a physical activity you like, maybe somethng like Martial Arts...but just DO IT. Play, have a good time, the harder the better. Go out and get dirty.

Learn proper and healthy eating habits and make it a lifestyle. You have the time now to determine what the rest of your life will be like. Now I turn the soapbox over to someone else... .

I'm with eric, i told you in another thread that i recommend martial arts.....i really think thats the best option. I know a lot of kids at my old martial arts school lost huge amounts of weight and were doing crazy flips after just a year or two.

A thousand pardons, Phreaknite, I didn't connect the two threads. I usually pay more attention than that. http://www.bodybuilding.net/21755-8-post.html.

I had meant to say something about the weight work but I got so busy speachifying I forgot.

It is most commonly recommended to wait until adolescence to begin weight work. In general this means around age 13 although it varies (a clue: if your getting facial hair, pubic hair, or some more size down below that's a hint that puberty may have begun).

However there is no real reason to fear weightlifing at age 11 so long as it is done safely and with certain guidelines in mind. Most strength gains for preadolescents will be neural adaptations. It is possible to get a little muscle gain but the adrogens are just not in place to put on a lot yet. Yes, I saw "Little Hercules" too and besides the fact that the kid looks hideous I think it's pretty safe to say his "special diet" was spiked.

If it were my son at 11 I would start him out with moderate weights. In fact I would probably choose a weight he could do 12 to 15 reps with so I guess I should say fairly light. He would not up the weights until he could complete 3, if not 4 sets with that. Strict adherence to form, proper warmup, and post workout stretching would be mandatory. I would avoid the dynamic olympic lifts.

I'd start him with bodyweight squats until the above guidelines are met and then move on to a light empty bar. Keeping in mind that there is not a big relationship between doing bw squats and proper form for weighted squats so form still has to be learned. I wouldn't have him bench at first but would start with pushups. Setting records would not be a priority. Slow and steady would be the credo.

No deadlifts or any exercises that exert shearing forces on the spine. Plenty of rest between sets at least at first.

man just believe you can do it, research everything there is about dieting and stuff. I really got motivated from dickheads who teased me in the past and some negativity i was in. through them, i've lost 43 lbs and there amazed..my whole life completely changed. ( im gonna be a senior in highschool ) i just met this amazing girl this summer...now if i didnt lose that weight, there's no way in hell i'd be dating this hot ass chick..you gotta think about looking good for the future and when your doing it with your girlfriend, you want to feel good right?! right. the feeling of waking up everymorning happy and slim is the best feeling ever. It's better then being rich and having money. there are to many fat people who are rich but aren't happy. dude eat bad sometimes. It's really retarded not to. i always found my self eating crap unfortunately. which was dumb of me...so if you want to avoid that, try a little and stop! its all mental...if you want more info just let me know, but i promise you anything is possible..

TunaMan's Sig:Everyday is coming whether you like it or not, so get off your ass and use your body!

no pardons necessary eric, I was just backing you up ;)

I would recommend martial arts to anyone, anytime, anywhere...especially to lose weight.

I figure the more people who say it, the more he will see its a great idea
