Exclamation hey everyone

Hey, i just joined recently and have been looking through the massive amounts of info on the site. I been athletic all my life until i had shoulder surgery the middle of last year so I workin my way back into it. I've always had a good diet and have been taking protein post workout since i started lifting.

The reason why i actually joined is aorund that premise though. I've been trying to find a good pre/post workout meal bit and I've been running into a wall. I'm trying to get in shape for football so I don't need to look huge, but i do want to see if there's anything out there that can help in the all around nutrition sense. I have been reading up on citrulline malate and seems to be a good thing for athletes and might start on it, but once i started actually looking into products I hit a wall. There are so many products out there that I don't even know what to do with myself haha. I want to try to stay off creatine if at all possible or anything else that might create a dependency.

So basically summed up if you don't like reading like me. I'm looking for any suggestions on pre/post workout supp. that will help with an athletic physique and performance (football).

so if anyone could help that would be great!!! And I know nothing works immediatly so don't think i want that magic pill, i just want something that can help out.

I don't remember reading anything about creatine and issues with dependancy. I've used creatine (both mono and CEE) sporatically throughout my training and I've never seen anything that even remotely resembles dependance.

As far as supplements go, first make sure your diet is in order. Even if you think your diet is good, it may be not be. Maybe you should post your diet (more specifically the macro breakdowns, protein fat and carbs)

Don't try and get fancy with supplements. A good whey pre and post combined with malto/dextrose works wonders. Creatine is also a good supplement to consider. Stay away from the NO-Xplods and the Nitro-tech Superpump shit (basically most supplements you see in the muscle mags).

Lately I've been using the Six-Star brand of protein and creatine. It seems to be working very well and the price is decent. Plus it tastes pretty good.

I've actually been taking mhp up your mass. It's a meal supplement to help tot try and straighten out my diet. But i take that for breakfast a coldcut sandwich for lunch then sometime of meat with some bread and veges for dinner 90% of the time.
http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/mhp/mass.html

So, I have been taking the mhp stuff twice a day then taking just designer whey after i work out.

And I know malto/ dextrose are carbs, but what are the best way to get them? Something i just add to the shake? Or do I get enough during the day?

And by dependency, I don't mean without your useless, i just don't want what I've heard of is of almost access water in your muscles, then once I stop it just dissapears.

And, Citrulline Malate? I know its in some of those brand name products, but what about just by itself with the protein in a pre workout shake?

That "up your mass" stuff is a supplement, treat it as such. Plus, its 13 bucks for 7 servings and only about 10 grams of protein per scoop. Normal wheys are about 24 grams a scoop! A normal whey packed with cheap carbs would kick the shit out of this product, not to mention be easier on your wallet.

Your diet is definitely lacking. One of those "up your mass" shakes, a sandwich and some meat with bread and veggies is not going to do shit. That's barely one meal for me! Whats your height and weight? You should be consuming 1-2g of protein per pound of lean body mass and most of that should be coming from real food, not a tub of meal replacement powder. You wanna get strong and put on some muscle, then you gotta eat accordingly. A great man once said "Eat or stay the fuck out of the gym!", that advice fits nicely here

Malto and dextrose can be bought in bulk, cheaply, and added to you protein shakes pre and post.

Creatine is good because it helps with your muscular endurance during exercise. Its not like you're going to gain 2" all over and turn into the michelin tire fatass because you're taking it. To be honest I can't notice a difference other than on the scale.

I don't know much about citrulline malate so I won't give my advice on it. There is a sticky about it on the site though, read that and you should have a good idea of what to do.

The up your mass is more a vehicle for conventiently getting the low and medium GI carbs in. They take up a lot of room so you end up with huge servings and a noneconomical product. But the product does what it sets out to do. There is a difference between regular whey and cheap carbs and the MHP product. That difference is that a regular whey and cheap carbs in the form of malto has a very high GI. This product doesn't. So while it is not a very economical thing to do it is a much better "weight gainer" than the former (whey + malto and dex) which would be better for pre and post.

But I agree with Kane that you'll get more bang for your buck out of a good whey. You'd be much better off improving your diet and plus having a good pre and post plan, as he said.

Citrulline Malate can be bought in bulk powder form from Nutraplanet.com or bulknutrition.com. It would be better to have it along with creatine and I myself have only noticed the best results with CM when combining it also with higher doses of BCAA's (higher than my whey...which is high) around 7 grams. I don't think any of this is necessary. Whey plus carbs is the best investment for your money. I like to have a whey isolate for pre and post and a regular whey mix for any other time I might take some.
