Gender: | The Starting Strength one is the one that has the 3x5 I think. RabidRabbit is doing Rippetoe's program, you should check out his journal because he's kicking the shit out of it. |

Gender: | Just a few things. I agree the Rippletoe is a great idea. Don't try it for two months though. Do it for as long as you progress. There is not time limit on beginner and intermediate programs. And that's the other thing. Everybody please stop saying 'single factor 5x5', it makes no sense and is misleading....plus in bugs the shit out of me. Say 'intermediate 5x5' or I'm gonna start eating nails And good luck. |

But the reason I wanted to interject is because of those reasons I stated above. Some people, when comparing it to the mass they get initially from a split, if only looking at things in terms of two months, may get very discouraged with what they see as lack of progress. So it's important to know that different people will react differently but most everbody will gain massive amounts of strength and the mass will come along with it. So it's very important, what you, Kane said about splits not being effective unless your pushing serious amounts of iron. And of course these full-body programs will put on serious amounts of good quality mass...and I mean a lot when compared to a split for a non-advanced lifter (which in reality is most people). I like to be very clear about these things because there has been a lot of misinformation floating around. For instance when the Starting Strength first started making internet rounds it was being described as a "3 month program" and that "Ripletoe used this to put 50 pounds of mass on beginners". That's a little misleading (see reasons above) since some people might be on it for close to a year. But make no mistake, you'll get stronger faster this way than most any way and most will put on some serious mass. Last edited by Eric3237; 02-26-2007 at 07:31 AM. | |

Gender: | Do both. Center your workouts around bulking with basics as has been described here. As far as the diet goes though, it's pointless to eat yourself fat thinking that the extra calories help gain muscle. It'll all have to come off sooner or later. Eat enough to gain of course and maybe even lean toward too much rather than too little just don't go nuts. IMO it's very discouraging to watch the fat accumulating hiding the muscle you do put on. Having 18" arms doesn't look like much if you're in 38" pants. You don't appear to be naturally lean (nor am I) either and will probably smooth out easily if you're not careful. |
