Gender: | Hi, I'm confused about which protein powder to buy. I read somewhere that whey protein isolate is the best but I see many powders out there with a mixture of isolate and concentrate with concentrate listed first. Also, they have casein and other proteins and not just whey isolate. Some have a blend of three proteins and they say they're better because the three different types release at different times throughout a longer period of time and that's supposed to be better. I've looked at EAS, Muscle-Link, Omni Nutrition, VPX, GNC, Designer Whey and they all say their the best. I need to lose fat so I have to watch my calorie intake as well. The protein powder would be a good way to increase my protein intake without incresing my calorie intake too much at the same time. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Riley |

Casein is great if you're looking for an extended release protein. Most night time or time release proteins are casein. Egg protein releases at a rate somewhere between whey & casein. I use blends because they're cheaper. Most of your protein should be coming from your diet. Try looking at trueprotein.com. Or Optimum Nutrition 100% whey...it's a great blend for the price. |

| Rank: Lightweight Experience: > 1 Year | I got a jug of PM protein from GNC for...$12. The number one ingredient is casein...it's a blend. But I think this would be a better choice: http://www.nutraplanet.com/product/o....html?sel=1105 You might be able to find it cheaper if you shop around. I just searched "casein" at bulknut & nutra. |

Gender: | Thanks for the info. I'll buy the whey protein isolate to take after lifting. In the morning I have a protein drink for breakfast instead of actual food so I can consume a lot of protein for very few calories and fat. Does it make any difference if I use they whey isolate in the morning or would casein or a blend be better in the morning as a meal replacement? Thanks. |

Gender: | I'm overweight so I'm trying to diet and put on muscle at the same time. I shoot for 1800 calories a day but I usually wind up around 2000. I hear a lot of people say you really can't diet and put on muscle at the same time but I need to lose weight so that's what I'm trying to do. I've lost a lot of weight so far and still managed to make progress with the weights. |

You shouldn't skimp on breakfast though...it deserves as much respect as the other 4-5 meals a day you should be eating. I think it's good to get some low GI carbs in first thing in the morning. It should help with your energy for the rest of the day. Just adding oatmeal to your shake will help. Casein or whey will work in the morning if you're having protein in every meal (meals should be around 2.5 hours apart). I think it's most important to take in the casein at night. |
