As far as I know, there has never been a study that definitively says. It also depends whether it's after exercise, etc. And what do you mean by a "normal" person?

"normal" "average" same shit dude.

either way I dont know of any study, but I can tell you that if I take in 50g shake or more, I shit my brains out like 10 minutes later. On the other hand if I take in 50g of chicken, I can barely move after, and it doesnt have the same effect as whey. from that alone i would say it depends on the type of protien, and the situation in which your eating it in.

Why do people continually ask this question?

It's like if you were in the sun and you put on some sunblock. You can sit around wondering just how much time your spf 45 gives you before you burn, meaning you will burn, or you can reapply often just to be safe.

Same thing with protein. Just concentrate on meating your protein needs with some margin for error and spreading it throughout the day if you can, but if you can't, it's more important that you actually get the protein in somehow, than questioning how much you can "absorb". As the others said, there is not answer to this question.

"Just concentrate on meating your protein needs..." I love it, and true, get the protein from meat! Meat your needs!

(not trying to sound like a smart ass, just thought it was a clever play on words)
