Default Toss the yolk???

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I've been doing a little research from various sources and from what I've read about eggs, keeping the yolk can be quite beneficial. First almost half of the protein in the egg comes from the yolk. I think there is a common misonception, especially with young lifters that all protein comes from the whites. Secondly isn't there quite a bit of beneficial vitamins and minerals in the yolk? Last but not least people also toss the yolk because of the cholestorol factor, but shouldn't lecithin found in the yolk take care of most of that. If any body knows anymore please help because now I'm not real sure what to do with my yolk. Btw I'm new. I just stumbled across this site and have been reading it pretty religiously the past couple nights and collected some good info. Thanks for all of your hard work. Johan

IMO it all depends on the type of diet your following. If your running something like a CKD or UD2 were fats are moderate to high, then keeping the yolk is of great benifit. That is were all the fat (both good and bad) are contained.

If your running a low fat, or 40/40/20 you may want to toss them.

You do bring up an interesting point though, many people believe that the all of the protien is in the white, but that simply isnt true.

We had a pretty big discussion on this topic before:
http://www.bodybuilding.net/nutritio...ighlight=yolks

Basically I agree with what hrdgain says, it really depends on the type of diet you are following. There is alot of benefits to the yolk but if you are cutting you most likely want to limit the number of yolks you eat.

Personally I will have one or two whole eggs then a bunch of egg whites just to balance the fat/protein ratio.

Beside what the others have said in terms of cholesterol and health is most likely up to the individual. Some people simply don't react very strongly to saturated fat and cholesterol in the diet. Whether dietary cholesterol is a big factor is still in debate. The fact is many people with high cholesterol will find little to no benefit in reducing sat fat and cholesterol in the diet. So that begs the question of how much a role this had in the first place.

Obviously it has some role. That has been demonstrated. But the extent of that role is different in different people. The only thing that can really tell you is getting checked. You are absolutely right in all the other things you point out about the yolk.

There isn't much of a difference minus the fact it's pretty sick tasting and your risking salmonella poisoning.

It has been demonstrated by research that the protein in raw eggs is not as completely digested as cooked. A lot is lost that way. There is also something in raw egg whites that can inhibit absorption of certain things. Plus salmonella risk. Cook your eggs.

I came accross this thread on another board that I think really speaks to this issue of cooked vs. uncooked. It's really about whey protein but it's all part of the same thing. There is a really big "raw food" fad going around. Arguing that cooked food is un-natural and dead, etc, etc. It's completely unsupported by science and shows a lack of understanding of how cooking aids in the digestion of certain foods.

I have actually argured that I would go for cold filtrated whey protein vs. some fancy ion exchange simply because it's less denatured and cheaper. But that doesn't mean I'm gonna eat raw meat because IT'S less denatured. I saw an article by that Dr. Mercola dude suddenly saying everyone should eat their eggs raw because the whites if cooked become denatured and useless. Bullshit.

Some of this gets a little over-involved and out there. I'm strictly paying attention to the first few posts.

"because the whites if cooked become denatured and useless. Bullshit"- I agree . How many people cook their eggs? Just about everyone and pretty sure I've never seen raw eggs in any body builder or lifters diet. I'm not sure how much of a difference it would really make cooked vs uncooked but just the danger alone of not cooking them should be enough!!! Cook your eggs

According to the study I posted there it's about half as digestible. Obviously it's only one study but I think it's pretty persuasive. Lot's of people if they down a bunch of raw eggs will get some terrible gas...there's probably a reason for that!
