Default Breakfast Question for a Newbie

How do you feel about a bowl of cheerios in the morning first thing? I eat this prolly 4/5 times a week with a few strawberrys or blueberries. The other days I eat oatmeal (which I can't stand). Are Cheerios a good alternative?

I'm assuming your goals are to cut seing how you dropped 20lbs in a month or 2...What kind of cherios? If they are just the plain multi-grain ones then they should be fine, although i dont know the nutrition facts off the top of my head. So as long as they dont have more than a few grams of sugar and are low GI carbs, you should be fine on those. Ditch the fruit if cutting. What you do have to look out for is the milk, which has very high GI sugars in it. Last, you need to be eating some protein with breakfast. What i would TRY (never done it before) is mix some protein with some water and use that as "milk". Experiment with different flavors and such and come up with something you like.

If you dont like oats then just dump them into your protein shake uncooked and blend.

Do you like eggs? If so, those are an excellent breakfast choice.

thanks so much for your reply. it helped a lot. I know that most fruits are very high in sugar, but I thought blueberries and strawberries were two of the exceptions.

Are you "cutting" as such? Or was it just a general lifestyle change? You've lost weight pretty fast but you say you're a newbie. Without knowing anything about your goals or what's going on I would just say a few things in a general way:

I think it makes a lot of sense to get fat down to a manageable level....say around 12% (or a little higher) for a man before you start trying to really pack on muscle. While doing that a person could gain a lot of general strength which would serve well when the excess fat is off. Excess fat makes it hard to gain muscle. However, I think the worst thing a "newbie" could do is to diet down, aka "cutting" via a severe caloric deficit. Because what you're doing during that is turning off a whole lot of mass building machinery in your body and turning on fat storage. In other words as soon as you start eating either maintenance or a little more you body is "primed' to recover it's fat losses and it going to tend to want to do that instead of building muscle.

So....and this is just my humble opinion...if you are "cutting" with a big calorie deficit stop doing that and slow it down. Start a strength program and allow the fat to come off a little more slowly. That way when the bodyfat is down where you want it and you stop "cutting" you won't tend to balloon up as much and you may have a better time in the long run instead of entering a cycle of yo-yo dieting. If none of this applies to you then fine...like I said it was general stuff.

I know a lot of the traditional bulking cutting devotees may jump on me. But there is no way anyone can explain how it makes sense to tell your body it is starving, and so to shut down hormone production, and pretty much beat your pituitary with a hammer at the very beginning of taking up weight triaining. Unless you have a medicine cabinet full of pharmaceutical magic in which case nutrient partioning is completely different.

I'm not gonna jump on you, what you're saying is right on. The most counter-productive thing people doing when trying to lose body fat is to cut calories too much.

That being said, how did you get that answer from the question 'Are Cheerios a good breakfast food'?

To answer your initial question, I was in the same situation as you. I figured Cheerios were a good choice since I hated oatmeal. After more research, I decided Cheerios should probablly be avoided. My breakfast now is a whey protein shake with skim milk and oatmeal mixed right in. I can't even taste the oatmeal so I found this the best way for me to get it.

If you really want to avoid the milk you could use water with some ice and a banana or other fruit. Don't be too scared of fruit even when the goal is losing body fat, just don't eat a ton.

The reason I lost so much weight and am still a newbie is because i did it the wrong way and just totally cut my calories down to about 1000/day. After reading here and other sites, I now understand that it is the wrong way to go about losing weight while keeping my muscle. I will give all of your advice a try, and appreciate it very much. One more question for you.

Why is it so beneficial to just eat the egg whites...should I eliminate the yolk? Thanks.

Well, Cowboy, as you can see I don't need to answer your question, he just answered it for you. I just read between the lines. Fortunately, outaylor is no longer doing a severe calorie defecit.

I simply see a little detail like cheerios being unimportant to what I saw as the bigger picture, being weight loss a little on the fast side. But as I said it was general based on a guess. And why I'm explaining this I don't know

Well, beneficial which way? Its 2 sided. Tossing the yolk is advantageous if you are trying to cut via low fat diet. If your bulking there is no reason to toss them as it would be more beneficial to keep them as the yolk contains more protein than the whites, along with some fat and carbs.

^^^^The yolk contains about a third of an eggs protein. But, yeah, there's a significant amount of the protein in there.
