What are you trying to accomplish?

If it's muscle, then it's pretty cut and dry:

-Creatine Mono (not the GNC brand!) I use AST creatine and like it.
-100% Whey from Optimum Nutrition

That's all I'll ever need. The rest of my money gets dumped into groceries.

Thanks 0311, Semper Fi. (77-81). Yes I am allways trying to increase muscle and strength. I have been throwing a cast net during shrimping season here in S.C. 50-60 casts every other night. I guess I worked some different areas of muscle, The sorness is going away. (made bench near impossible). I was wondering if it was because of not being on my regular protien sups.( GNC brand 100%whey).

GNC has been suspect since allegedly not having the same amounts of ingredients put on their labels. For example, if their whey says 30 grams per serving, it's more like 20.

IMO, 100% whey from On has always met their labels.

Im also a fan on Optimum nutritions whey, i also like Muscle milk now (been using it for a few days) and ive always heard the same things that 0311 was explaining about GNC before so it leads me to believe its true, personally i like to go to the vitamin shoppe i think most of their stuff is good.

I've tried Muscle Milk, I didn't care for it. I will try Optimum Whey. Also, any output on vita packs.

also, what is better, drinking 50 grams or 20 of protien per drink. I mean does the body store protien or use it and pass the over.

Awhile back there was a big discussion about this. I think it depends on how much your body can handle any more than you cant handle probably will b sent out in the bathroom. I usually take newhere from 40-50 grams a shake but sometimes 20-30 it really depends when in the day for me. pre and post I get 40-50 but if its maybe morning or when I get home from school i may only take in 20.

Yeah, I was in the thick of that argument!

Myth #2: You can only assimilate 30 grams of protein at one sitting.

Fact: The body has the ability to digest and assimilate much more than 30 grams of protein from a single meal.

Speaking of high intakes of protein, people have been perpetuating the myth that you can only assimilate ~30 grams of protein at a time, making protein meals any greater than a 6 oz. chicken breast a waste. This is anything but true. For example, the digestibility of meat (i.e. beef, poultry, pork and fish) is about 97% efficient. If you eat 25 grams of beef, you will absorb into the blood stream 97% of the protein in that piece of meat. If, on the other hand, you eat a 10 oz steak containing about 60 grams of protein, you will again digest and absorb 97% of the protein. If you could only assimilate 30 grams of protein at a time, why would researchers be using in excess of 40 grams of protein to stimulate muscle growth?1

Critics of high protein intakes may try to point out that increased protein intake only leads to increased protein oxidation. This is true, nevertheless, some researchers speculate that this increase in protein oxidation following high protein intakes may initiate something they call the "anabolic drive".13 The anabolic drive is characterized by hyperaminoacidemia, an increase in both protein synthesis and breakdown with an overall positive nitrogen balance. In animals, there is a correspondent increase in anabolic hormones such as IGF-1 and GH. Though this response is difficult to identify in humans, an increase in lean tissue accretion does occur with exaggerated protein intakes.14,15

The take home message is that, if you are going to maximize muscle growth you have to minimize muscle loss, and maximize protein synthesis. Research clearly shows this is accomplished with heavy training, adequate calories, and very importantly high protein consumption. This means that meals containing more than 30 grams of protein will be the norm. Not to worry, all that protein will certainly be used effectively by the body.

Sounds good to me. After Muscle milk and Metrx meal replacement packs, I went to GNC mega whey and drank it 4-5 times a day. I felt more improvement with more protien. Thanks for the good info. I'm now turning 45, Im just looking for good advice on protiens and vita packs. trying different sups gets expensive. I'm not looking for the magic pill, just the best sup to go with a hard working 45 yr old. Basic w/o 215 bench x 6 rep 5-6 sets, consi curls 50lbs 20 reps 4 sets. 45lb dumbell flys 6 set 20. lat pull down 85lb 6 set at 12 rep. Legs get the work daily . (construction) I work harder not smarter. abs get the ab machine and being active. all help is much welcomed.
