Vitamin Water
I was wondering what everyones opinion is on vitamin water? I'll drink one occasionally while working out or when I need some flavor in my water.

I personally don't think there is much benefit to those drinks and its more of a marketing concept more than anything. While there is nothing wrong with getting some extra vitamins during your workout if you really want to make sure your covered your much better off buying a good multivitamin or vitamin pack.
The cost is probally cheaper as well. |
If you can get it cheap then it's might be worth it but like sleazy said just take a multi. Its not a bad thing just an expensive markiting gimic.

In my personal opinion its not worth balancing the extra carbs in my diet to fit in a gatorade or vitamin water when i wholly 100% enjoy water and prefer it instead. There are a bunch of research projects going on in the past few months about gatorade though. I know at www.gatorade.com there was a whole big mess of a deal about how gatorade improved performance according to their labs or whatever.
I tend to take what a company says about the science of their product with a grain of salt...however there is a study that i did find about gatorade. Here is an excerpt and the whole study's PDF... Quote:

Small note, yes these studies are for gatorade, and you asked about vitamin water, but I just generally thought you meant "sports drinks". |
And just for fair measure.......
This study says Chocolate Milk Beats them all ;) I personally beleive that water is the best thing to drink. |
Some info here on carbs vs. no carbs in cardio which is what that gatorade study is about except for the electrolytes which imo can't hurt unless you're worried about retaining water, oh my!
http://www.bodybuilding.net/18678-21-post.html But Playmaker said "working out". Again he was talking about the new "Vitamin Water" marketing crap but as far as sports drinks or carb replacement in general you can't lump all types of "working out" together. What is ok for low intensity may not do it for HIIT or weighttlifting. More great info on this kind of thing can be found here: http://www.sportsci.org/index.html |
If u like the taste then drink it....I wouldn't rely on it for vitamins of course. It wouldn't be my first choice though as a during workout shake, I would rather have something thats like BCAA's or a product like Xtend with the bcaa's and the cirulline malate (spelling error)

One that milk article I would like to point out a couple of things. One is it was only nine males cyclists. Two..."they cycled until their muscles were depleted of energy the RESTED 4 HOURS, during which time they drand chocalate milk, Endurox, or gatorade. The chocalate milk performed ABOUT as good as gatorade, according to the article. The study to me just isn’t appropriate as it simply doesn’t take into account the way sports drinks are actually used.
There is a big difference between sipping on something like gatorade in the middle of an edurance event or a long athletic event and resting for 4 hours during which time even a serving of oatmeal would have worked well! Same thing with Michael Phelps drinking Carnation between races. Olympic swimmers don't jump from one race to another without down time. Gatorade has a lot of it’s carbs as fructose, not necessarily a bad thing but fructose only replenishes liver glycogen. But as someone who's played hard in the sun and worked hard in the sun I can tell you sipping on chocalate milk is the last thing most people want to do. I'll go for the gatorade. Also, I don’t think a lot of people are “gatorade intolerant” but so many people have some degree of lactose intolerance it’s not funny. Not that I don’t drink a lot of milk..as 0311 says it keeps the skinny away. But I think it’s a LOT more refreshing than chocolate milk and will put you back in the game a lot faster. Hell try a waxy maize product. I think ChinPiece Dave can attest to how well this works during an athletic event. On the water vs. sports drinks there are practical reasons why water is not always best. But I am talking about prolonged endurance events or long athletic events in general. The reason I'm saying all this is we have to take into account the way in which these things are used and were meant to be used. Comparing everything together is jsut not appropriate and fair. |
lol i was kidding about the chocolate milk...i read the article and was pretty shocked they pass that off as news haha
at any rate, i don't know all the details on the types of sugars involved or anything, but gatorade and other sports drinks have their advantages, if not just for the electrolytes... But hey, in my opinion, sometimes it just comes down to what makes you FEEL like ur pullin more of your own weight, so to speak. If you feel better, you will perform better....how that ties into physiology sometimes creates some grey lines, but those are the rules i play by for now :) |
I figured you were joking :) but a lot of people might take stuff like that seriously so that's why I like to say something.
