Whole eggs

I have been under the impression that egg yolk was bad for you due to the high cholesterol. So are eggs good or bad for you? I have been eating egg whites and would rather eat the whole egg. Is it ok to have egg yolk even with a family history of high blood pressure? One more question too, what foods give good carbs and which give bad carbs?

Was that family history of high blood pressure coupled with high cholesterol? Wouldn't be a bad idea to get checked out for a baseline. Whether eggs yolks are bad or good really depends on who you are. I don't think they are anywhere near as bad for people with cholesterol problems as they are made out to be but no one can really say.

I eat all the egg yolks I want and have my cholesterol checked a lot and it's always good. Another person could be in trouble with half the amount I eat. There are, btw, good fats in the yolk that could actually help. But the amount of these depends on the diet of the chickens. I'd love to give you a straight answer but I don't think it would be anything more than opinion. Some of the protein, however, is in the yolk. Up to 2.5 grams of it.

People have different ideas about what constitutes good carbs vs. bad carbs. Mostly it is about the glycemic index. High is bad and low to medium is good. But then people will say fruit is bad even though a lot of it has a med to med-low rating. Soooo.....you can look at the "glycemic index" stickies in the fatloss or maybe the nutrition forums. Also keep in mind that it makes more sense to consider the glycemic load of a food rather than just the glycemic index.

I had some of the same questions about eggs. This should help you

Yeah, btw, I forgot to make the point that I mentioned in that thread and I wanted to elaborate on that. You'll notice alot of these commercials for cholesterol meds. They'll say this is for people who can't get it together by diet alone. In fact this is the case a whole lot of the time. I have a friend just like that. They cut down sat fat up their fiber, take omega 3's to very little benefit. So it does make you wonder.

I'm not saying that a person shouldn't bother improving their diet and doing all those things! There is a definite connection. But for people PRONE to high cholesterol they may tend to develop it even when they don't overdo egg yolks or fatty meat....

Personally I have about a 8:1 ratio (whites : yolk)

i think that the whole (throw out the egg yoke) this is overrated. i eat alot of eggs with the yoke everyday and my cholesterol lvls are perfectly fine and i had hystory of heart atacks and stuff like that. if you dont eat alot of junk foods and frozen foods you should be fine.

Cool, thanks for the info guys and for that link Johan. I also went and seen my doctor the other day and did a 12 hour fast and had my cholesterol and blood sugar checked and asked the Doc a few questions. My tests came out fine and I guess just as long as I stay away from saturated fat and salt (sodium) then my cholesterol should be ok.
