Default Mayan calender

What up people. I dont mean for this to be super deep or nothing like that, but i used to do a little research on the calender a long time ago like when i was in high school. i never go tto reading everything about it due to the fact it seems a little extra complicated.

to sum it all up though the mayans were obsessed with time keeping and astronomy. they made a calander thousands of years ago which has dates all the way up until dec 21. 2012. they say the calender stops there because the world as we know it will end due to an astronomical event. if anyone wants to read about this calender i will post some info on it, but to anyone that has heard anything about the calender, read or heard about it, whats your thoughts on it.

im at work bored so i figured i would spark up a convo about something different

Kinda funny that they could see the end of the world but miss the downfall of their civilization.

I guess we all have blindspots

i hear that. i look at it sometimes. like even though they were great astronomers how would they have predicted all these events that happened but couldnt see that. have a few thing they have studyed that will happen on that date. but i dont know if they are giving them more credit than they deserve. second hwo the helll can they read exactly what they wrote when their whoel civilization was gone

Yeah, kinda. I think the Mayan culture was wiped out much more quickly than the Inca culture. Still, the conquistadors were just a bunch of lonely guys several months away from home. They married Mayan women. In lots of the small villages and towns, the people speak a mix of Spanish and Mayan. It's pretty interesting. I took a class on Andean cultures last semester...obviously the Incas were much farther south, but it was a similar scenario as far as language and culture is concerned.

I think they knew their civilization would end...they just wanted to mess with us, so they said the world would end in 2012. Either that or Squanto was busy chipping away at the calendar when the Spanish came riding through and killed everyone. Who knows.

Do you know if there is an exact date in 2012? I wonder if they adjusted for leap years. Someone was off...every day is 23.9-something hours...that's why they add an extra day in February every four years...to keep us on track.

If for one reason or another, the world ends december 21, 2012 I will make sure that I have a front row seat for the apocolypse ... we might all die, but I'm sure it will be an amazing show.

Hmmm...probably the world as various people have known has ended lots of times. But I doubt it ever happened in one day. But you figure something like the black plague. That's the world as you know it ending. If you wanted to put a specific day to when the troubles began...you could do that and who's to argue about it?

Then again, a tsunami hits your island...the world ends as you know it. Mount Vesuvius took a day. Sliced bread was invented in a day, or at least I hope it was. If yellowstone erupts...shit maybe yellowstone is going to erupt on Dec. 12, 2012!

It pretty much did end in a day for the Mayans. The Spanish came in and killed the hell out of everybody in about a day...even the king, I believe.

EDIT: I've been thinking about the Aztecs the whole time... The Mayans disappeared for apparently no reason. A long, long time ago.

I saw that program on the History Channel and it referred to that calender and many other people predicting that same date, but many texts, such as the i ching, are pretty vague in their predictions. apparently, there's some real astronomical anomaly that happens on December 12. something about all the planets in our solar system aligning. astro peoples don't know how everything will be affected, but odds are nothing will happen. after all, wasn't there a "sure" prediction about the year 2000? all the computers were supposed to reset their dates back to 1900?
