Thanks Eric I completely agree that quality is of the upmost importance. If my last rep is shitty I generally rack it and wait for the next set, seems to be working well too.

Stress Day today

Had a good workout today, I still didnt hit a full 5x5 on squats but it was only cos I cant count!! I accidentally stopped at 4 reps on my third set.Bench was HEAVY!! I only had 4s and 3s in me today,Ill hold the weight over next week.Hit all my chin reps tho so sweet.

Stress Day 14/1/08
Squat 3x5, 2x4 1x2 98.75kg
Bench 2x4 5x3 1x2 80kg
Chin 10x3 BW+12.5kg

Overall solid, my squats felt a bit off but I videoed them so Ill check why, also didnt feel completely wrecked after today like I normally do on stress day, dunno might be the massive buffet brreakfast I ate!!

Light Day today

Still sore from monday,DOMS is really kicking my ass ATM,squats felt good but hard with the sore muscles.Press was hard, I made 8x3 tho so thats cool.I did dumbell rows instead of barbell cos I just plain suck at barbell rows.I know I need to learn them tho,I just dont have the patience ATM Plus dumbell rows feel awesome.

Light Day 16/1/08
Squat 3x3 70kg
Press 8x3 45kg
Dumbell Row 3x8 27.5kg

Does that look like too much volume for a light day?? Ill see how friday goes, and judge from there.

I like dumbell rows to hopper their safer than BB rows for a start the only problem is you can only do 1 side at a time (takes longer to , and theres only so much weight you can get on a dumbell.

I have some extra long adjustable dumbells because of this but I also sometimes use a cambered bar (short curl bar) that has a flat part right in the middle to hang onto.

Hi guys

Performance Day today, had a tough day probably thanks to a shit week of sleep, and fuck all carbs.Hit a rep PR on squats but they were heavy as shit and awkward.Bench was ok, hit a rep PR there too.Deadlifts are just too damn hard after heavy squats and benches, Im sucked ass at em lost 2 reps from last week Im not sure what to do with deadlifts ATM.I may rotate heavy squat PRs on fridays with heavy deadlift PRs, hmmm but I really want to start doing GMs too LOL.

Performance Day 18/1/08
Squat 1x3 111kg (Rep PR)
Bench 1x3 86kg (Rep PR)
Deadlift 1x2 132.5kg
Pullups 2x5 BW

Im loving pullups ATM I never been strong enough to do them before.

Dont beat yourself up about the deadlifts, honestly if I hit rep PR's for bench and squat, you wouldnt even see me deadlifting. although, I stay away from doing the major compounds on the same day anyway, I always feel like I'm so taxed after hitting heavy bench, squat, deads, that I cant safely do the others afterward.

hrdgain81's Sig:I don't do this for my family, my friends, women, accolades, pride, or ego. I do it for me and no one else, its just part of who I am.

Ok, so you were doing ok as for a PR's but your were stuck on deads. I take it you also wanted to be fresher on PR day so you too them off light day.

So if you kinda look at the deads in isolation nothing much has changed. You're still getting pr's and you're still stuck on deads.

I'm not saying you should move deads back or anything. I'm just saying that you are looking at the other stuff and saying it is too hard to follow deads with (which I agree with....that's why I put deads on light day even though that sucks too). BUT really nothing has changed...your are stuck at virtually the same place at deads so I would look at trying something different for deads.

When it comes down to it there are beau coup limitations to this and ANY fullbody 5x5 method. Just do the best you can with what you have, adjust what you can, and move on. I personally don't like anything that makes me have to deadlfit less often than I am capable of. When I was doing these 5x5's I'd say screw the other stuff if it meant I progressed on deads. But if that's what you have to do then do it.

You could simply prioritize the deads more also. Do them first and don't worry about the squat pr's so much. It pays to experiment. You may be a person who will progress better on deads doing them less often. Don't be afraid to play with it. The TM of anything else isn't foolproof as you well know and the things you learn about yourself will be a hundred times more valuable than anything you read in a book.

Ahhh, the time old Deadlift dilemma.

You may want to try moving the deadlift to light day (again), but actually do it light. Try, perhaps, 5 singles or so at 50-70% percent somewhere. Just get some work in, without fatiguing yourself, in order to re-inforce technique. Wednesday becomes "technique day" for squats and deadlifts. Light practice.

On PR day, you could alternate like you suggested. You could also do 3 weeks waves; 3RM, 2RM, 1RM, switch lifts. Keep trucking along with squats on monday.

Like Eric said, there's no real clear cut solution to this. The above is just an option.

Cheers,
Jeff

Thanks guys

Good to know Im thinking along the same lines as yall.Might try doing PRs on fridays with deadlifts alternated with squat PRs for a while, see how that pans out,Im kinda hoping that doing the heavy deadlifts will help my Monday volume squat day a bit.

Thx Jeff and Eric

PS Jeff how everything going with you mate?

Oh you know I thought I'd mention, just in case, that you should not be afraid to give yourself plenty of rest between these PR attempts. If you want to express as much strength as possible then REST is essential. It seems to be the culture that everything is a race regardless of the goals but there is not real advantage on that day to not allow yourself plenty of recovery time. Hell, yes take 5 minutes or even six if you need it if that is the difference between a success and failure.
