| THURSDAY: Standing Press 5x5 @ 75 Deadlift 5x5 @ 265 Pullups 5x5 bodyweight baaad form at last two sets, muscle failuree for biceps I did pullups (Above) [not enough?] and for abs I did that crunch machine thing.. damn that thing burns. SATURDAY: 5x5 Squat @ 170! 5x5 Bench @ 120! kinda started to fail on last set, should I be touching my shirt lightly because I stop an inch above my chest in fear of muscle failure and not being able to get the bar back up (no spot) bad? 5x5 Rows @ 150 ...woo. tomorrow I shall hit the iron again. I've been loading up on the food all day and night. I see a litttlee teensy amount of growth in my arms and thighs... nowhere else really. nothing to comment on hehe. my muscles seem smaller today like they've been shrinking / catabolizing (it's monday today, last workout was on saturday) they have a habit of doing this if I don't work them often / not eat enough on my off -days? what? what's causing the catabolism to take place here.. it's like I get a little muscle growth.. and then it goes away! it wont stick! | My bench has gone up by 20 pounds. It hasn't done that in over a year. I was stuck at 95 and I'm now at ~120. 5x5!!! before I couldn't even 3x5 95 pounds. My arms feel bigger. I feel like I'm getting a better workout. I feel stronger. I'm getting heavier. Bigger. Stronger. Thicker. A year ago progress like this took months. I'm increasing my weight each workout on all exercises without struggle. Curious, why would I stop what's working? |

Gender: | i am honestly curious why you should not do the dft 5x5 too. yes, it is a fairly advanced program and based on your thread in the training forum you might be better suited to a program such as ripptoes ss, but if you are just using the basic dft 5x5 template for a linear progression rather than the various cycles that are written in the sticky i would think that you would be ok progressing that way. plus, in my opinion, you need to be in the correct frame of mind for a program. if you were on ripptoes and you didn't progress for whatever reason (lack of consistency, not eating enough, etc.) and you are down on the program and YOU don't think that it wont work for you then ultimately it wont. you have to have confidence in the program that you are doing and think that it will work for it to actually work, otherwise i think you will just end up in a rut banging your head against the wall (much like you were when you did ss). my bigger question is why was your squat at 165 for 5x5 on the first workout and then all the way up to 270 5x5 in the thursday workout ????? |

ok, have said this...here is why DFT 5x5 is not appropriate. the whole 5x5 funda is set up like this: if you can progress by adding 5 lbs to the bar every workout, you are a NOVICE. if you can progress by adding 5 lbs to the bar every 2-3 workouts you are a BEGINNER. if you are at a level where you can only progress by adding 5 lbs to the bar every week you are an INTERMEDIATE TRAINEE. if you are at such a level where weekly progression does not occur, you must program on a monthly basis. this is when you are an ADVANCED TRAINEE. DFT is a specialized form of ADVANCED TRAINING where it is impossible to progress on a weekly or workout to workout basis. our friend DV here has a VERY low total. he can barely bench press 135 lbs!!!! doing DFT 5x5 is kinda pointless when he will end up adding like 40 lbs over 8 weeks versus he could do rippetoe's correctly and add 80 lbs over 8 weeks. lets assume he has poor genetics and his bench sucks. this is fair. perhaps his bench sucks to the extent he cannot progress on a workout to workout or a weekly basis. no big deal. hell, when i did the Texas Method i was also benching 135 for 5x5...but this was because i had never benched before...my bench was 135 whereas my squat, etc were 300+ so back to my point.....lets say he has poor genetics....then he has to train bench differently. he doesnt need to jump directly into Advanced DFT...he can very simply modify his rippetoe program and change it into a more variable 3 day full body program. regarding his squat and deadlift....i need to see videos before i believe anything seriously. | |

Gender: | I have to agree. The numbers just do not add up and make sense. DFT at this time is not ideal for you and Wolf aka Sentinel aka Anuj explained why very well. Take a program you can progress every workout/week with and squeeze it for everything you can rather than change it up the first second you get a little frustrated. |

| Rank: Lightweight | im lookin at the dates of the post. darkvision are you saying that you put these weights on in a week that you could have never done before. like the 25 pounds on the bench, 100 pounds on the squat. have you even tried those weights before? i ask that because there is no way possible you can just add that kind of weight on in the matter of a week. i dont doubt what you say but there is no way you can make that kind of jump in a week |
