Winter insulation gaining journal

I'm still searching for a program/platform to start off of, should have something worked out within the next two days. For now I'm just reestablishing baselines with Rippetoes.

10/28
Stats:
~172lb
BF est: ~12-13%
1RM's unknown

Here are a few pics from yesterday to use as a base for comparison. Be warned that the direct overhead light is giving me a lot more credit than I deserve :) Let the eating begin.

The two SS workouts done so far are as follows:

A
Squat: 3x5x205, up 5
Bench: 3x5x175, try a 5lb increase
DL: 1x5x325, relatively easy but in the interest of not hitting it too hard too soon I'll leave it at a 5lb increase
Accessories: done

B
Squat: 3x5x210 up 5
Overheads: 3x5x100 could go up 10 probably, but will stick with 5
Rows: 175 ehhh...keep.
Pullups: 3x9 w/ 35lb keep
Accessories: done

FlyUSMC 10-29-2008 08:07 AM

10/29 A
Squat: 3x5x215 felt good, was going to do another set but somewhere in the 3rd set I tweaked a muscle in my lat area. Not sure how, but I didn't want to push it any farther. Up 5.
Bench: 180 going to keep it, though I could try an increase I'd rather not stall out too soon
DL: 1x5x330. Pretty easy, I'm thinking stick with 5lb increases for the above stated reasons, though I'm considering a bigger increase given that the lift in question is deadlifts. Any thoughts?
Accessories: done

Finding some good info online on choosing programs and such, for any other relative noobs such as me this is a pretty good resource

The Setback Journal:
I've been gone a month, you've probably noticed. This is because I had the devout pleasure of entering a MMA match with a Chevy Suburban. Here's how it went:

ME:
Collapsed lung
2 broken femurs/pins inserted
ruptured stomach
concussion
limbs hacked/mangled/bloody/broken
coma
removed spleen
countless other injuries

SUBURBAN:
totaled (small victories)

the worst part for me is going from putting 400lb over my head to not being to sit up in bed. It'll come back. Until then...sporadic checks and updates.

Ross86 11-22-2008 07:54 PM

Glad to hear you'll be okay. Sorry to hear about all of this. That's a huge setback...and a life changer. Please keep us updated.
Take care

Pitysister 11-22-2008 08:43 PM

jesus dude. glad you're still alive. take care man.

EricT 11-22-2008 08:51 PM

Wish you the best in your recovery. Get moving as soon as possible and don't give up!

Darkhorse 11-23-2008 06:45 AM

Wow, that's terrible to hear. Just focus on healing and staying positive. Don't start thinking about what was. Just where you are now and that you'll be a little bit stronger every day. When I got out of Iraq, I was nailed with viral meningitis and woke up 2 weeks later in a hospital in San Diego with a midline all the way up my arm. I weighed 156 lbs with a full beard. It does take a while to heal. Just take baby steps man. That's what I did.

Just update us whenever you have spare time.

ChinPieceDave667 11-23-2008 08:48 AM

oh man. I glad your alive. I hope you get better. the weights will be waiting for you.

HIThopper 11-23-2008 12:44 PM

Damn, sorry to hear about that stuff MC,be safe man,all the best.

FlyUSMC 11-24-2008 11:30 PM

Update:
I'm doing pretty well, comparatively, and healing decently quickly. I'll be living at the hospital at least through the new year, but things are better and better every day. I haven't weighed in lately, my best guess is that I'm somewhere around 155-160 soaking wet. Ugh. I DO have some kickass scars, though. Can't wait to get back to lifting, spirits are high at this point. Be well all.

widdoes2504 11-25-2008 03:57 AM

I hope you continue to get better quickly and my hopes and prayers go out to you. Get better soon man.

iron_worker 11-25-2008 05:09 AM

That really sucks man.

Its awesome you're healing up at a good rate, though. I wish a complication free and speedy recovery to you.

IW

TALO 11-25-2008 05:12 AM

Glad to hear your doing better. Spirts sound nice and high .

Take care of yourself.

Pitysister 11-25-2008 07:44 AM

keep the attitude up :) i bet that will get harder as time goes by....but hey....you don't have to work....somebody else is doing all your cooking for you :)

FlyUSMC 11-25-2008 05:26 PM

Ha. OH. MAN. Do NOT get me started on hospital food. It's incredibly terrible. I was able to bring in my protein powder once I got put on solid foods so I'm getting a little more from that, but I'm still basically skin and bones at this point. Can't even lift my hands over my head

FlyUSMC 12-06-2008 12:54 PM

The good news: I now CAN lift my hands over my head. I'm progressing at a rate the doctors have seen extremely rarely, instead of being here till New Years I'll now be going home on the 12th! Good deal.
The bad news: I thought I lost about 20 pounds. Turns out that wasn't the case. I lost 32 pounds... The worst part is that it could be up to a year before I can start lifting again. I really hope it won't take that long, but there's a good chance.
More good news: whatever the case, I'm still alive. I should have been obliterated by that SUV, so even if I can't lift for a year... life is still good, comparatively.

Ross86 12-06-2008 02:18 PM

That's awesome news. Way to have a good attitude about it. It's great that you'll be home for the holidays. Thanks for keeping us posted. You're still in my prayers. I hope you maintain the speedy recovery. Take care

Pitysister 12-06-2008 02:57 PM

that is awesome dude.... :) glad to hear it.

the weights will wait :)

just curious...what happened to the other driver?

HIThopper 12-06-2008 09:46 PM

If you can lift your hands over your head maybe someone can sneak some dumbells into you!!!:biglaugh:

All the best mate:)

FlyUSMC 12-07-2008 06:21 AM

True, I can at least get my gunz back :dumbells:
Pity- the driver was fine. I was on foot, not in a car... I did some pretty good damage to that 3.5 ton truck, but thankfully the driver and the 3 kids who were in the car were all completely fine. I've talked with them pretty extensively, they're actually great people. I'm going to meet them in person this Wednesday

FlyUSMC 01-04-2009 09:53 AM

Figured I'd toss in another update since it's been a while

The weight continues to drop off. Partly due to meds, partly due to the fact that my stomach is the size of a marble, and partly because everything hurts so bad that I never feel like making the effort to go find food, the total is now 45 pounds gone. 45. yeah... I now weigh in at a bone crushing, brute terrorizing 135.6lb. The eating is coming up slightly, I've now at least managed to stop losing weight. Now just need to start gaining it. Overall I'm doing alright, starting to ditch the wheelchair in favor of walking with a cane part of the day. I'm moving around better as the weeks go by, but things are still a pain (literally too). Might start hitting the gym every now and then once I can drive again and do some upper body stuff, but we'll see what the docs say. Outpatient therapy is kicking my ass and is supposed to go on for 4 more months. That's all I've got for now, till next time

Joker13 01-04-2009 10:18 AM

Wow, hang in there. Good to see the recovery is coming along

Ross86 01-04-2009 11:36 AM

^^^ Ditto.

Pitysister 01-04-2009 12:42 PM

double ditto.

ChinPieceDave667 01-04-2009 12:46 PM

thrice ditto

TALO 01-04-2009 12:53 PM
