Definition of powerlifting?

What would you guys define powerlifting as ?
Thanks

Powerlifting would be training/competing in the squat, bench, and deadlift. Personally I don't think you can be a powerlifter if you don't compete.

I'd tend to agree. Perhaps if one specifically looks to bring up just those three exercises and all one's training is bent on that, then s/he can call themselves a powerlifter even if they don't compete. But powerlifting is a sport. It was conceived as a sport or a specific competition.

Not many would tolerate someone who called himself an Olympic Weightlifter who had never competed in the Olympics or any weightlifting competition or even trained toward such an event. Yet it seems like half the people on bodybuilding boards these days call themselves powerlifters.

But as long as one does not try to define powerlifting as a WAY OF TRAINING I am good. That is a ridiculous notion and for most is just a weak-minded label they put on their training to make them feel more legit.

^^^ I had a guy tell me last week that we was a powerlifter and had been for years. He doesn't train much any more though. And he never really squatted. He got me a Tap Out shirt for Christmas because I'm into powerlifting... :-/

cherish that shirt. someday....it will be worth.........10 cents.

What in the fuck does Tapout have to do with power lifting???? Fighters don't power lift, they do strength and cardio and technique.

I'd say I'm more powerlifter than bodybuilder.... but not a powerlifter by your critique seeing as I don't compete and I don't train shirts, wraps, squat suits etc. I guess you could say I'm just addicted to strength training? lol
