Definition of powerlifting?

What would you guys define powerlifting as ?
Thanks

Ross86 01-16-2010 04:21 PM

Powerlifting would be training/competing in the squat, bench, and deadlift. Personally I don't think you can be a powerlifter if you don't compete.

EricT 01-17-2010 10:30 AM

I'd tend to agree. Perhaps if one specifically looks to bring up just those three exercises and all one's training is bent on that, then s/he can call themselves a powerlifter even if they don't compete. But powerlifting is a sport. It was conceived as a sport or a specific competition.

Not many would tolerate someone who called himself an Olympic Weightlifter who had never competed in the Olympics or any weightlifting competition or even trained toward such an event. Yet it seems like half the people on bodybuilding boards these days call themselves powerlifters.

But as long as one does not try to define powerlifting as a WAY OF TRAINING I am good. That is a ridiculous notion and for most is just a weak-minded label they put on their training to make them feel more legit.

^^^ I had a guy tell me last week that we was a powerlifter and had been for years. He doesn't train much any more though. And he never really squatted. He got me a Tap Out shirt for Christmas because I'm into powerlifting... :-/

Pitysister 01-17-2010 01:37 PM

cherish that shirt. someday....it will be worth.........10 cents.

Pirate 01-19-2010 12:09 PM

What in the fuck does Tapout have to do with power lifting???? Fighters don't power lift, they do strength and cardio and technique.

iron_worker 01-20-2010 05:34 AM

I'd say I'm more powerlifter than bodybuilder.... but not a powerlifter by your critique seeing as I don't compete and I don't train shirts, wraps, squat suits etc. I guess you could say I'm just addicted to strength training? lol

EricT 01-20-2010 07:36 AM

What?

Pitysister 01-20-2010 07:56 AM

iron_worker 01-21-2010 09:21 AM

A "powerlifter" is a person who competes against other "powerlifters". You are not a "powerlifter" unless you compete and you are not a "bodybuilder" unless you compete.

Powerlifting is a name under misdirection. The sport of "powerlifting" is determined by the amount of weight you can move in your squat, deadlift, and bench press. You are tested on muscular strength, not power.

Power refers to the amount of time it takes to move an object, explosive lifting. Olympic lifting should be considered "powerlifting".

i disagree, i dont think you need to compete to be able to tell someone that you body build. i believe it's a sport wether it's for pro's or amatures.

EricT 02-01-2010 12:32 PM

I guess it's really dependent on how you feel about labels. It's one thing to say you bodybuild and another to say you are a bodybuilder.

It's like saying "I play tennis" versus "I'm a tennis player."

Personally, I don't see the use in getting hung up on the labels either way.

hi guys...
Power lifting is an exercise being used mostly for building muscles of the body.In my view a weightlifting competition in which participants compete in the squat, dead lift, and bench.Training for power lifting is quite tough.

Hello guys.....!
Thanks for sharing information about powerlifting.Just wondering: How many people here bodybuild, powerlift, or weightlift? Thanks in advance.....!

stevedav 03-31-2011 11:00 PM

if one expressly examines to convey up just those three activities and all one's teaching is angled on that, then s/he can call themselves a power lifter even if they don't compete. But power lifting is a sport. It was believed as a games or a exact competition.

If I can look good either way, then I might as well do power lifting so I can be stronger, faster. If I can be muscular like some of the World's strong men (well the ones that arent ripped like maruisz lol) by power lifting, then that seems like the best choice to me. What do you guys think?

dexxflex 04-16-2012 07:00 AM

bigger faster stronger

build 05-31-2012 10:37 PM

a type of competitive weight lifting involving the performance of the bench press, dead lift, and squat

brake22 08-20-2012 09:26 AM

power lifting can be only after good practice for few months.
