I use the dextrose/maltodextrin in my preworkout shake because it will provide fuel throughout my workout. It'll also delay my glycogen stores from being depleted so I can workout longer and harder....

I too live in CA and I think Max Muscle is very expensive. I wouldn't shop there. I usually mix my own stuff. I recommend N-Large-2, some whey isolate, creatine, dextrose, and a seperate container...
