Weight gainer = protein + maltodextrin I know I'll probably catch shit for it, but I still think weight gainers are a bad (aka not good) choice for meal replacements. You could mix the protein powder with a variety of other foods and still get the same result minus the gigantic insulin spike. The protein could come from other sources also. |

| ^^ Most wieght gainers are not just pro/carbs, they contain high amounts of fats as well. Just go look at muscle milk's label. Some are much better then others, and you can even find weight gainers that use only low GI carbs ... Edit: Because they contain fats, they are not good choices for pre or post workout shakes ... thought I'd mention that. it all depends on what you are willing to pay for ... but 9 times out of 10 its going to be cheaper to go with regular food, IMO. |

Gender: | I am getting in about 4-5k calories, 5 meals are solid. Preworkout I mix oats and isolate. But in the AM I normally have a weight gainer. Granted most are bad, malto+ crappy whey blends. But I get a more low GI and protein isolate weight gainer. Back to the point, when most guys come up to me and ask "how do I gain weight?", if I were to respond "eat more " they would normally disregard that suggestion and say "oh I eat a lot" Without looking at someones diet, and going over it with them step by step, I think the quickest way to put on some mass is by adding in a weight gainer. AVG weight for a guy my height is 150lbs. Most guys that are 150, wont know much about diet. So when you say "food", that may sound very abstract. I doubt they are used to eating more then their BMR. For guys under 180lbs looking to gain weight, extra calories cant hurt. Its obviously not the best path, but its a start. |

| No doubt slayer, many people have a problem with liquid nutrients, I for one dont. Then again I've never been in a situation where I "could not gain", very much the oposite actually, so its hard for me to gauge how a 150lber would need to eat to gain. On the other hand, it would be worth mentioning not to overdue it on the cals, unless your prepared to do some cardio durring or after your bulker to keep bodyfat down. |
