I think maltodextrin is in some foods. It is a filler in all of your NO supplements...the powders, anyway. It's a complex carb. Dextrose is corn sugar...it's a simple carb and is therefore more quickly digested. The purpose of taking them is to prolong/intensify your workout. They are used to replenish/fuel your glycogen stores which are your chief source of energy.

Someone let me know if all of that is correct.

The idea of complex and simple carbs as it used to be known has changed now. Maltodextrin is really a simple carb in terms of how quickly it is absorbed. It has a very high GI...don't be fooled into thinking it is "complex" in the way that oatmeal or something like that is. We no longer look at carbs as simply how long a chain is or how much it branches. Remember, potato starch is a "complex carb" but it has a very high GI...one of the highest. Similar with malto.

Dex and malto are both derived from corn.

The reason for taking both dextrose and malto is complictated. Mostly it allows for better and quicker absoprtion of carbs. Anytime you have a mix of carbs like simple ones and glucose polymers such as malto you get better uptake in the gut since there are only so many transportors. Plus you get better gastric emptying due to the increased osmolarity (provided a proper dilution) and less bloating, discomfort, etc.

These are both HIGH GI carbs. People really need to avoid calling maltodextrin "complex" (even though manufacturers like to label it that) because it will confuse people into thinking it is like a low or medium GI carb, which it IS NOT.

Nice writeup Eric.. I never paid much attention to carbs except postworkout aside from bananas and oatmeal preworkout!

Darkhorse's Sig:My Training Philosophy

how big would you be if ALL you did was:

Squat 400 x 20
Deadlift 500 x 5
Bench 315 x 5, or dip with 100 lbs added.
Chin with 75 lbs strapped to your waist x 5
Miltary Press 225 x 8

Pretty ****ing big is my guess. Without any "rear delt work".

I think you've written that several times now, but it just clicked for me. I was confused about malto until I just read that.

Thanks Eric

Good info for everyone in here, and Ross you are dead on with the use of malto/dex in terms of energy and glycogen stores. Of course all this becomes debatable when you start trying to drop bodyfat, but thats a discussion for another thread.
