| hey guys, this will be my first post. but i have been lurking on this site for maybe a month now, there is a lot of good information and im trying to assimilate as much as i can. as of right now im taking GNC whey protein, gaspari sp 250, and just eating a lot of food. the superpump is really messing up my bowls so i think im gonna quit that after my tub runs out, and i didnt know this but apparently GNC protein isnt worth salt. btw im 25, 6' 173ish pounds, i started working out again 3 months ago at 155, i dont know how to measure body fat but im still pretty scrawny, maybe able to pinch an inch on my tummy right at my belly button. but i work out 3 times a week, trying to keep to multiple joint excersises, hitting chest shoulder, then back/arms, then legs, and not spending over an hour at a time in the gym. i was looking over trueproteins site because someone recommended that, and i wanted to include glutamine and bcaa's this time around, as well as a quality protein, planning to take a shake before and then immediately after my workout. so i was wondering should i buy bcaa's and glutamine seperately or buy a custom mix, with 10 percent bcaa's, 10 percent glutamine and then 80 percent whey protein, which would give me 3 grams of the g. and bcaa.s per scoop, i.e. 2 scoops = 6 grams, where as 5grams of each are recommended from what ive been reading. also dextrose and maltodextrose are recommended, and cheap so i was gonna buy those seperately and just include them after workout. another quick question, ive seen no info on soymilk, but currently thats what im mixing my wheyprotein into, chocolate flavored soy.. and i plan to keep using it , it has a funky texture by istelf but lends well to making a decent shake, and no lactose, thanks in advance. |

| Soy = increase in estrogen ... bad mojo. Glutamine is a huge waste of money. 98% of it gets destroyed in the gut. As for the the protien mix I'd say the only reason to buy extra bcaa's is if you want to use them seperately from your whey. there is enough in whey already, adding more doesnt make sense. |

Gender: | The whole soy and estrogen thing is blown out of proportion. The body cannot convert phyto-estrogens into estrogens. There is weak estrogenic and so research (and supplements) for menopause symptoms but even then it's not all that significant as people would have you believe. I.E. there is some relief from symptoms like hot flashes (but no reduction in frequency) but it is simply that, relief from symptoms not an increase in body estrogen. Use soy in moderation if at all, avoid soy millk and stick with traditional femented products. A soy protein ISOLATE would be fine but you're better off sticking with whey and a variety of protein sources. I think glutamine may have some benefits but it certainly doesn't "pack on lean muscle". Lots of it is used in the gut for digestive health so it is beneficial in that way and also seems to have some immune enhancing effects. But in general, I agree it probably won't make a big difference unless you were to take 30 to 60 grams a day. Last edited by EricT; 08-30-2006 at 12:21 PM. |

My opinion is if you have some extra cash laying around, why not go for it and see for yourself? Never hurts to try | ||

| well thanks for the speedy replies, i appreciate the info and advice. so you guys mix your protein in with water then? if anyone has any advice on flavor mixes on the trueprotein site, and how they taste in water thatd be good info. ill drink protein with milk at night, but i read something about the casein(?) proteins in milk slowing the absorption of the whey protein? or is that also blown a little out of proportion and shouldnt be worried over? |

I don't blame you there, bro. I'm just talking about facts vs. perception of facts. The evidence simply goes both ways and lots of the hysteria about soy doing stuff like shrinking your testicles and making you hate girls is based on faulty and even mythological assumptions. One of those is that Asians eat a ton of soy everyday..which they don't. Hell I just read about a couple of studies suggesting that soy protects older men AGAINST the effects of estrogen (prob by by the weak phyto estrogens blocking estradiol). Pesonally I could care less whether someone eats soy or not and there are certainly a lot of reasons why someone might choose not to. I DEFINITELY say only in moderation. Just like most things...One the glutamine thing I agree with you in general, verb. But I hate articles that take studies done on ENDURANCE training and pretending that is valid for resistance training. The bioavailibility thing is certainly misunderstood, as you pointed out, and glutamine has many benefits in the body. It's prob one of the most, if not the most, important aminos there is. Quote:
On the glycogen synthesis thing here is a good post from over at Mind and Muscle (not that it matters too much but you know I can't let this stuff go ):Quote:

Does glutamine stimulate protein synthesis? The recent evidence says no...at least in rats. Does this mean it has no benefits to weight trainers? Of course not. I used to take lots of it and I noticed I got less colds in the cold and flu season....I thought. But I haven't taken it in quite a while and it's made no difference.
