Default The Cordyceps Thread

I've been kicking around the idea of giving this stuff a go around. I've just started my research on it, but its "traditionally" used for a lot of stuff, the biggies can be found here

http://www.drugs.com/npp/cordyceps.html

Most of the studies say run it at 3-4g a day, and at 8 bucks for 100g at nutraplanet, that dosage wont break the bank. I'm going to continue looking into it for the next few days before I make a final decision to try it or not, but I figured I'd gather my info here for everyone to see, and for others to chip in, or post thoughts and ideas.

I'm mostly interested in the effects Cordyceps has on respitory function:

Respiratory
Clinical data

More than 5 clinical studies (all approximately 4 weeks in duration) demonstrated significant clinical improvements ( P < 0.01) in respiratory symptoms (including chronic bronchitis, bronchial asthma, and cor pulmonale) after administration of a cordyceps-containing medication. Dosages ranged from 3 to 4.5 g/day of Cs-4 for 2 to 12 weeks. When Cs-4 was used in combination with oxygen and other drugs in treating patients with cor pulmonale (right-sided heart failure), improvements were seen in respiratory and heart function as well as in sleep and emotional-spiritual state. The combined use of Cs-4 (3 g/day) with astemizole (10 mg/day) and ketotifen (2 mg/day) was effective in treatment of asthma as compared with the controls treated with Western medicine alone ( P < 0.05). A potential mechanism may involve Cs-4 reducing the production of IgE (which will reduce the asthma attack) through T H1 and T H2 immune responses. 3 , 15

And also sexual hormone function:

Sexual dysfunction
Clinical data

In several placebo-controlled, double-blind studies, patients with reduced sexual drive are typically treated with Cs-4 (3 g/day) for approximately 2 months. In elderly patients, clinical improvement of sexual drive and function for the Cs-4 group was statistically significant as compared with the control group. There was an increase in 24-hour urine 17-ketosteroids in the Cs-4-treated patients; thus Cs-4 may affect sexual drive through the sex hormone systems or through a direct action on the sexual center of the brain and sexual organs. 2 , 11 , 12

The later i understand is a study on sexual dysfunction, but I think it warents more research.

It also seems to promote overall health, and acts as an anti-oxidation and immune system booster. So lets see where this information journey takes us.

Cordyceps most effective use, may lie within its ability to combat fatigue and stress. It has been shown to increase time to fatigue, and to reduce stress, allowing for better performance in certain animal studies. [9] In fact, this use received world-wide attention in the early 90's, as Chinese marathon runners on a Cordyceps-containing diet broke world long-distance records.

Pity, I've never had one of his energy drinks, but I can only imagine what that would taste like. This stuff is a fungus that grows on caterpillars hahahah.

Joker, I'm going to pick up a hundred grams and run it for the next month. I'll log it in my journal starting next week if you want to see how it goes before picking some up. If it doesnt produce the desired results, perhaps Rhodiola rosea may help with cns stress.

I would like to know how scientists come up with this stuff. Do they wake up one day and say, hey that fungus on the caterpillars might taste good.

^^ From what I've read this stuff is an ancient chinese herbal remedy thats been used for hundreds of years, and I dont think it tastes good, how the hell could it?

Ordered 100g last night, I'm going to cap it and run it at 4g a day for 25 days to see what types of results it yeilds. I'll keep track here so its in a central place. Here is a list of the other supps I am using, so you can all see a baseline of where I'm at.

Fish oil - 3-6g
sesamin - 3g
Xtend - 12 servings
DCP - 12 caps
whey - varries

I was going to add in beta alanine, but I'm going to hold off so I can assess what the effects cordyceps has.
