| I am 5'10" 210 pounds. on a 1-10 scale of work out hardness say 1 is easy 10 is very intense, I say i work out at about lvl 7.5 . I was told only 1 teaspoon of glutamine but when should i take this 1 teaspoon a day? also how much and when should i take whey protein? I was told an hour before workout, an hour after workout, and then before bed is this right? I was also told by a different guy take it in the morning and then before bed. I don't know when I should take it?? Also I don't want it to make me gain weight as I am also trying to lose weight and gain muscle at the same time. please help, TY |

Gender: | First of all I would stop rating your workouts on how intense you FEEL they are and go by how intense they actually are. The key is progression. You can feel you are working your tail off but because of what you are doing be spinning you wheels and simply maintaining. If I've had a bad day and I am fatigued I might rate a workout at 10 but in actuality the workout may not be stimulative or may acutally be a regression. See what I am saying? You can take your whey around 15 minutes prior to you workout and IMMEDIATELY after. It depends on what pre workout protocal you choose but for post most agree that right after with no delay is best for whey (and carbs and whatever else). One teaspoon of glutamine will do next to nothing for you. It depends on who you ask whether extra glutamine does anything in the first place but if you want to see any benefit you'll need a whole lot more than that. Pre workout and post workout and before bed would all make sense. And I take it you are trying to lose fat not weight. |

Gender: | ^^^Yeah some say 10 to 15 and some say up to 30, lol. Basically as much as you can afford. If it has any benefit I believe it probably lies in digestive health and immune health. Both very important things for bodybuilding. As for as directly affecting muscle growth the jury is out and probably will be for some time both in terms of glutamine and other single aminos. The biggest thing to consider is not whether they have any benefit at all but if that benefit is really any different than a high protein diet and in some cases carbohydrate supplementation, etc. There are so many checks and balances in the body espeically when it comes to the free amino pool that I think, in general, the addtion of extra amounts of one amino has very little affect in the face of high protein and adequate caloric intake. Certain aminos are important but they tend to be found in abundance in the protein foods we eat or are manufactured in the body anyway. Glutamine is considered conditionally essential since it may be that in times of growth/stress the body is not able to manufacture enough but there is nothing definitive about it's effects. It is one of the most important aminos in the body for all sorts of reasons, though, that much is for sure. |
