GABA question? and one about Niacin.
I was reading on AST Sports Science about a supplement called Gaba which is for your nervouse system and brain health. They say on there that is you take 3-5 grams of it before you goto bed, it supposed to seriosuly increase the amount of growth hormone that you release. It also makes you sleep a lot better, and obtain more rest from your sleep.
Soooo..... I went to vitamin world and pcked up 2 bottles of Gaba complex pills because they didnt have it in a powder form. The lady tricked me behind the counter and i didnt read the lable until i got home, but the pills have only 200 mg of GABA in them, so i need to take 15-25 pills before i goto bed if i want to get the right dosage. But there is also 400 mg of Niacin and 1200 mg of something called Inositol.
Does anyone know what these things are, and if i would be taking way too much of them at once??
Also has anyone here ever experimented with GABA?
I would return that for sure.
I have a ZMA product that also has GABA, but like your product the GABA is underdosed (although everything else in it is adequately dosed). Pretty typical.
At fifteen pills you would be at 6 grams of Niacin. Niacin is a B vitamin and it is common to find it in sleep aids. However it's not gonna help your sleep unless you have a niacin deficiency. The RDA is around 20 mgs a day.
It seems to have relatively low toxicity. People have taken up to 2 grams a day with no ill effects other than flushing (if nicotinic acid form). That is caused by cutaneous vasodilation. It produces a weird feeling and itching. At 6 grams you are probably going to get this, and I doubt you'll be sleeping well. The nicotinamide form does not cause this.
Other potential problems with large doses of nicotinic acid are gatrointestinal irritation, liver damage, glucose intolerance, gycosuria, hepatic fybrosis...really all just possibilities of prolonged high doses (excess is well excreted in the urine and feces).
I don't know that much about inositol except that it is a required nutrient. Comes in beans as phytic acid - the stuff that blocks the absorption of some minerals. It's been studied for depression and other things. I've read of up to 12 grams a day in studies with no ill effects. The supplement recommended dosages are all over the place - from 100 to 1000 mgs a day. 15 pills puts you at 18000 mgs (8 grams). That's a whole lot.
I wouldn't take it. You should probably get your money back.
i'd take it back as well... the dose needed to get that much gaba would be quite harsh as far as the niacin dose. Gaba isnt' good at crossing the BBB, and the niacin is supposed to help, BUT i'd recommend checking out picamilon...
Picamilon is a Russian development, it is in essence the bonding of niacin (vitamin B3) to the amino acid GABA. This combination acts very differently and uniquely and can't be compared to taking niacin and GABA together as individual supplements
Ah. I was wondering if there was a purpose to the niacin other than its proported effects on sleep.
thanks guys, im gonna take them back for sure. I found at GNC they have GABA pills that are just GABA and have 750 mg each. I think im gonna grab a bottle of them, that way i only have to take like 5 frickin pills.
