Default dumbbell squats

Howdy,

I have been going to the gym for about 6 weeks about 4 times per week.

I am moving in to a new routine with squats and what not.. currently I have been doing dumbbell squats.

The gym has a smith machine (I have read some not so good things about doing squats with that).

How do dumbbell squats compare to squats (regular) and to squats (smith machine)?

Thanks.

Their fine. Only difference is that you will not be able to use 1/10 as much weight for DB squats. You should try to learn how to do them with both the barbell and smythe. Remember that your legs will always be a hundred times stronger than your grip.

very good point 0311. IMO barbell squats are the way to go...

Ah ok, thanks. If I had a training partner I would be more willing to jump into the barbell squats I think.

Is the smith machine bad for the knees (or other)? Since it doesn't let you go your natural line?

IMO i hate the smith machine... its good for a few advanced variations of the squat, but for regular back squats its just too hard on the body because your body doesnt go exactly straight up and down...

Does your gym have a squat rack? If so nothing much to be afraid of. You can start as light as you want and get it down. You're right in your thinking about the smith machine. Just like lafittraineer and 0311 said. You're body needs to follow a certain path to utilize proper biomechanics. And yes, they can be bad for your knees.

Yeah, I get tired of holding the dumbell. Use the bar and squat like a man. ARRRRRRRRRR
