Gender: | I need to get faster and need to get better acceleration because I want to play football. What workouts should I do beside sprints? I also want to get my calves allot stronger and powerful. What exercises/lifts should I do? |

Gender: | In the training sticky there are several strength and power programs. While training for football, I always emphasized on the big lifts...Bench, Squat, clean, hang clean, Dead lifts, Pullups, and rows. Going into the Gym and doing 80 sets of curls will not help you in football. As for your calves, standing calf raises and calve presses on the leg press in the 12-15 range worked good for me, youll just have to experiment. |

Gender: | do sled work. All you do it drag very heavy weight be it running, walking backwards, crawling, it's just a very effective workout. http://www.flexcart.com/members/elit...rase=sled&m=SR |

Gender: | To me, it depends on what your specific goals are. Probably what position you are playing. If you want to be able to sprint as fast as possible for as long as possible then sprint drills are still the main way to accomplish that. Weight work, plyometics and such are good but to get better at sprinting you have to sprint. I would not actually recommend resistance running such as dragging a sled. It completely changes the biomechanics and at best would result in no improvement in speed if not a reduction. First of all, when your sprinting anything that slows you down is bad. For instance, by the same token, when your first start out it is best to try and sprint only 3 or 4 seconds at a time and increase the distance slowly. Sled training could defintitely improve you starting power but the problem is that the start must be translated into proper running posture and cadence. So if you use a sled or other resistance use it for explosive take-off training but then always try to use regular sprint drills in the same session. In general, like everything, sprinting is very specific. Doing a certain thing mostly makes you better at doing that thing. So ultimate way to run faster is still to run fast. I agree, of course with Dave that sled dragging would be a fantastic workout and for overall fitness it would be great. It is just not a sprint specific workout. |
