Default Lower Back

I injured my lower back a little while ago. My chiropractor has strongly suggested that I no longer do deadlifts or good-mornings. Are there any other exercises that will give my lower back a good direct workout?

Weighted abs help too

TALO's Sig:"But when do you actually grow? Well, we don't grow in the gym. In the gym, we destroy. We tear down the body. We only grow when we are recovering. That's right, I said recovery. I see it all the time--people beating themselves up in the gym and not seeing results. They don't understand that hitting the weights hard is only a small part of growing or even cutting down. I could train the same all year round and get big or get ripped just by eating different and taking different supplements"

I'm curious about what you could have done to your back, for the chiropractor to tell you not to do deadlifts anymore? Is it irrepairable?

This is a little off topic, but I was on a forum yesterday where a dude told me that he doesn't recommend deadlifts, at least for muscle building purposes basically. He heard it from an old time bodybuilder. He said because of the amount of muscles involved and recovery time. Sounds kind of stupid to me, I mean the reason you do them "is" because it works so many muscles. And recovery time, well, you simply give yourself enough recovery time. If you rest enough, there shouldn't be an issue.

I pulled a lat a little while back. Pretty bad. I also have a history of lower back problems. Since my lat episode he's insisted no more deads or good-mornings. He's also a bodybuilder but believes that "dead-lifts and good-mornings should be banned from the gym".
When I saw him yesterday I told him my lower back has been acting up a lot more since I stopped those moves---especially good mornings. It's like my lower back has lost all its strength and integrity. He agreed and reluctantly said I could return to good mornings----LIGHT! He prefers I do weighted extensions but my gym doesn't have the equipment. So I'm seeking alternatives.

^^^My lower back stays better when I do deadlifts too. They are my FAVORITE exercise and I'd rather do them than anything. I wish I could do them more often...

It's not the exercises that are bad it's the way people do them that is bad.

I pullled my lower back sometime around jan-mar of 06 when doing deads. I got back to my room, laid down and couldnt get back up for a while. Well, after about 3 weeks i tried deads again and i went up in weight ;-) But thats not the point of my story...its that i still do deads and my back still hurts sometimes, especially after doing weighted pullups. But i guess its just the price you pay?

I started doing good mornings again this morning. So far so good. I'll know for sure when I wake up tomorrow.

I think logically that the thing you got hurt doing is the thing likely to make you hurt. When I hurt my back it was on the job and so deads of course can make my back sore but they don't really hurt it...but tend to help keep it healthy. On the other hand bent rows can kill since that is the position I was in when I injured it.
