I know your in a financial crunch but you can't expect too much from working out with light dumbbells. Yes you can get tone from them, but as far as size it won't really happen as you are eventually going to need add more weight.

If you can somehow scrape up $200 or so you can go to a used sporting equipment store (ex: Play it Again Sports) and buy a power cage or open squat rack and some weights. With this and bench you can do basically anything.

Alot of people buy really nice equipment then sell them to these stores for a fraction of the price when they lose interest. You can also pick up something like a bar and 300 lbs of new/used plates for $99 or cheaper at these places. Another good place to look is the local classifieds or craigslist.org as alot of people have a hard time selling weight lifting equipment and just want to get rid of it.

This small investment can last you a long time.
