Default Need some help with program to increase endurance

Ok. . . I think I could use a little advice here.

Ive been doing Ripp's starting strength program for about 6 weeks. Ive made great progress and reached personal bests in every exercise.

The problem is that I've notice decreased endurance and stamina in my legs and back during my hockey games. My legs burn out 1-2 mins on the ice and by the end of the game my back is shot.

I'm thinking that the 3x5 format while great for strength gains isnt the best for a hockey player.

Ive decided to increase the volume on squats and deads to 3x10 not sure if this is the best solution.

Any advice would be appreciated........

I don't think its the fact that your muscle endurance is decreasing. Its probably due to working out the muscles that you need to use to play. Your muscles are already fatigued and trying to heal up and then you go pushing them to the limit with hockey.

I'm not sure if higher volume would help or not in this case. You may need to just pick which is more important to you. If hockey performance is really important to you then maybe avoid working out like 24hrs before a game.

Thats my oppinion. Others will have more to say I'm sure. I dont' have direct experience with this. Although, I know running after working out is *way way* harder. So its probably similar to that.

I think you just need to have appropriate programs for in-season and off-season. If your strength program doesn't allow you to perform on the ice then it is not appropritate.

I'd recommend you go to http://strengthcoach.com where you will find tons of specific info for hockey and field sports in general. If you pay one buck you get a 14 day membership but that will get you more info than you ever got from SS in terms of conditioning and appropriate programming. Well worth it, imo.

^^^^^ what he said, and you also may need a little bit of time off for your body to recoup. after doing a lot of work for a real long time it is always good to take a week off. to get yourself together. keep your diet right and everything when you take the week off, if you actually do.

I do think, btw, that it is more than just your muscles lack of recovery although that's probably a big part of it. It's just that all that 3x5 strength work thrice a week is pushing muscular adapations that are a good bit different than the adaptations you need for endurance. But of course you also need speed and acceleration...good stuff like that.
