Default Squats are killing me...

I'm doing three or four sets of 10 reps. and I get so out of breath and my heart rate skyrockets to the point where I feel like I could have a heart attack and die!

Are squats supposed to be like this? Am I training too hard, if that's possible, or am I just overweight and way way way out of shape?

The weight may be too heavy , hard to say. What are you using ?

Sets of 10 for squats are pretty killer. You may be better off to stay in the 5ish range.

How fast are you doing 'em? I do Tabatas with back squats sometimes and I feel like I'm gonna explode.

Besides lifting weights, do you do cardio?

Thanks for the replies.

Right now I'm doing sets of 10 reps with 300lbs. Next time I think I'll go down to 275lbs.

I go down at a moderate to slow pace and then come back up slow. I typicall do four reps with a quick breath at the top inbetween each rep and then after the fourth rep I'll pause and take two breaths and then do another four reps and the final two reps I'll pause and take two to three breaths between each of the last two reps. After the last rep I'm pretty winded.

I was doing a lot of cardio but stopped a little over a month ago when I started a new job with a much longer commute. I just started to get back into walking on the treadmill. After a few weeks I'll start jogging again.

That is some heavy weight. How do you warm up to it ?

And why do you come up slow?

and how deep do you go?

Im thinking that perhaps you're tempo is a bit off...

but in any case, 10 rep squatters suck balls. i can squat 315+ free and pretty deep (below parallel atleast) but when it comes to doing 10 reps....225 is a struggle.

some people are built for high rep squats and some arent. look at strongmen...Andrew cook I believe can do 20 reps with 405...that type of strength doesn't come overnight. it takes ages to generate that amount of endurance. perhaps you're just not ready to do 10 reps with 300 lbs.

10 reps for squats is pretty taxing in itself, so that could be the problem. I don't think I've ever done a 4x10 for squats without being absoultely gassed.
