300 & 400 lb bench press

I know that most humans can get to 300lbs on the bench if they train properly. I've done it myself, years ago. I am wondering if most humans can get to 400lbs on the bench or if it's one of those things that is out of reach.

I know guys who have trained for years and can't get even close. Now chances are they didn't train properly blah blah blah so it is unknown to me if they had real limits or just improper training.

What do you think?

I can hit 365 X 2 all on my own after I already did 4 sets. My lifting partiner can hit 405 X 1. Also, look up powerlifting because 400 ain't shit to them.

Honestly as I get more and more into training the more i realize that your wieghts really mean shit. 400lbs is attainable, shit 500 is too. it all depends on how you train. to me a true acomplishment is doubling your body wieght on bench ... if your 140 an can put up 280 thats bad ass man.

on the other side, some people's joints just wont take it, so some have genetic limiters of that nature.

If those guys you know were bodybuilders then they probably didn't care. I feel the only way to hit the 400+ club is to train for it. The reps have to be 1-3, you need to at least double your calorie consumption, and the list goes on and on. That's the difference between natural bodybuilders and powerlifters. Bodybuilders pick weights they can do 4-12 reps with, have perfect form, and do more isolation exercises-for the majority. Some bodybuilders do hit over 400 but they're few and far between, and more than half of them are chemically enhanced to take the stress of lifting as heavy as that. Powerlifters condition their body for it and could care less about form and alot of them could care less about something like abs or definition. That's why I like Max-OT because it's a combination of both worlds, and if I keep this pace, I'll probably hit 405 (all natural)

I went through a phase where I waned to hit the 400 club so I trained like a mad man for a long time to obtain this goal. I mean I could do 315 for reps like they were almost nothing but hit 350 and I sunk quick. I made it to 385 and then I injured myself, not majorly but enough I had to back off and have never gone that high again. Alot does have to do with the weight you carry but I believe that some people are just genetically gifted in this area. Hey, I'm only 5'10" so I'm not complaining.

My homeboy can hit 430 any time of the day and he has never even used any drugs, not even creatine. He is just one strong mofo. So that means its humanly possible.

Yes I know it's possible, many have done it. I am just thowing around if the typical dude off the street, if he started training properly, could get to 400lbs.

My brother in law can do it and he really doesn't work out much. He's just a freak. Sure he has to put in his time but it doesn't take him long.

Its just that some mofo's are born strong. I can train for another 20 more years, but I dont think I will ever be able to bench over 400, unless of course if I am shooting 50 cc up my ass like Ronnie Coleman :D

WonderMonkey 04-06-2005 09:22 PM

Even if you switched your whole routine to target powerlifting?

I really don't worry about the amounts of weights that I lift, but I can easily say that about bench because I've been over 300lbs before. If I hadn't ever gone over that then maybe I'd care.

But 400? I don't think that is something I would get too anytime soon. And maybe that is why I probably won't.
