Correct way to spot for squatting

Hi all,

What's the right way to get a spot or give someone a spot while squatting, especially when trying a one rep max. Thanks.

Depends on preference, but if I'm going for a 1RM, I want someone behind me to reach their arms under mine and hold their hands in front of my chest and go down with me. Just imagine the gayest position possible and that's it.

That's the way my sons highschool football team spots for squats.

Same here as Ross. But ONLY for a 1-3 RM test.. All other times at all other rep ranges I have the presence of mind to stop a rep or two short of failure.

Or just have the safety bars in the correct place so you can put it down without hurting yourself.

i Honestly hate having a spotter though. but another way i have seen is almost just like someone is spotting you for a big bench. 1 person on each side of the bar guiding it down but NOT TOUCHING IT. I HATE WHEN SOMEONE TOUCHES THE BAR!!!!. which leads to me never having a spot :)

I like the idea of safety bars. Does anyone know of a good/cheap type that I should buy? I lift alone in my basement and usually never have a spot. Thanks.

If I remember correctly, Rippetoe does not advocate the spotter being behind the squatter. I'm at work and don't have my book in front of me.
