Rest between sets

Hi all,

I'm lifting for a combination of size and strength. How much rest should I give myself between sets? I couldn't find anything that spoke about that. Currently I'm giving myself two minutes between sets but sometimes I go as much as three minutes when I'm going heavy on squats or deadlifts. I usually stick to two minutes on all other exercises. I don't know if I'm on target or if I would possibly make better gains going lighter on the weight and taking less of a rest between sets. Thanks.

Riley

Do you use a stop watch ?

I personally go 90 secs , but that is just me. Everyone has a different rest time. Just do what you feel is best and play around with different times. I don't think there is a magic number for this.

Thanks for the reply.

I have a digital watch that shows hours., minutes and seconds so I can be accurate with how many minutes and seconds I rest between sets.

I take as much time as I need to complete all of my sets. Some people use a set time, but I don't think it makes much difference as long as you can complete your work.

Does anyone remember in which recent thread this was discussed to death?

I take as much time as I need.

You have to ask yourself what's more important, completing the set or resting for a set amount of time. Personally I'd rather complete the set. :D

Agreed.

yeah. i think time only matters when you are doing it for sports related reasons. i normally go 1 to 2 minutes tops but thats just personally what i like to do. but i def agree with what kane says though

OP: read the thread...

i don't rest less than 3 minutes. its impossible for me to move heavy weight without resting for ATLEAST 3 minutes. before i do max outs on any exercise, i take atleast 5 minutes....

its not that difficult....westsiders' and powerlifters in general take LONG rest intervals....you just gotto find your groove. start out with 3-4 minutes and if you feel good, reduce the time....then if you hit a particular weight where you need to rest more, rest more...

but i do use a stop watch and i do 3 minutes atleast.
