Default Shoes for a Beginner

Hello,

What would you all recommend as a pair of shoes for a beginner? I am currently reading Rippetoe's Starting Strength and what he has said in the book has convinced me that it is pretty much mandatory that I buy some flat shoes for lifting. I am currently doing a version of his SS program, but with a 5X5 setup (because my weights are lighter than they probably could be) and using the Barbell Row instead of the Power Clean while I master the Deadlift, Squat and Press. I understand that substituting the Row for the Power Clean is flawed because of my reasoning, but I have decided to do it nonetheless.

So far, my research has suggested that a pair of Chuck Taylor's would be the cheapest relevant solution. However, I have seen a lot of people complain that they have a lot of foot pain when doing the compound lifts at heavier weights. Plus, I hate hipsters and do not want to be mistaken for one (joking, kinda). I am willing to shove out more money to not have to deal with the foot pain, but at the same time I am not really willing to shove out 200 for a pair of Adidas. At least, not as a beginner.

I personally lift in skate shoes. They have a very flat bottom with quite a thin sole so they seem to work well. They don't have much support side to side but that hasn't been a problem for me.

For me, i prefer does shoes like mountain boots, are fantastic for squats. Doesn't hurt my feet, i can hold quite amount of weight, and they keep me balanced.

This is off-topic but if you are a beginner, if i wore you i wouldn't start with the 5x5 training, you should first "wake up" all body muscles in a progressive manner

Thanks for the input. After 3 weeks of a 5X5 I can quickly see that it will lead to over training if it hasn't already. I'm moving to the SS program itself which is 3X5; hopefully this way I will get more weight on the bar quicker and get the form down better.

Thanks for the post and the knowledge you provided here for the beginner's buddy... I use that kind of the shoes and feel good Hopely.....

I like lifting in wrestling type shoes. They are extremely light and it gives you the feel of being "free". Also when I hop on cardio it's a lot easier because it almost feels like you are bare footed.
