Depends on the area of focus. I find that the board/weight-plates (differing hieghts), allows me to focus on my quads more intently and not overdevelop the glutes. Smaller glutes and larger quads will give the appearance of a smaller, tighter midsection and not the thick overall powerlifter look.

you hit it on the head.. it just depends on what you want to work/look like when the day is over. and of course there is always the comfort issue. I don't like using boards but I also use to do powerlifting. so it's more of a comfort thing and what I'm use to. I think I might give it a try soon to see if I still like it the regular way.

I don't know how you guys don't get fucked up marks on your shoulders without using a pad. If i don't use a pad or towel I tend to get bar marks all over my shoulders. Not a good look when at the beach :P

i only get them doing standing calf raises, and that's even padded. so I just gave up... first time my girlfriend saw them she thought is was some weird hicky from someone else.... I had to take her to my gym after I healed and do a couple set to show her... I got a big apology after that  ;)

I use a manta ray for assistance. I can do lighter weights without it, but once I go close to max, I need t because my shoulder isnt good enough yet. I have heard boards under the heels are bad, something about the stress on the knees. But I squat in bare feet, or wear some chucks if it is a max day for support. I never wear shoes tho, luckily, Ive never had an accident in the home gym, with the exception of stubbing toes. Oh, box squats are fun.
if doing calves, you can use the board/block for a step off, get the mad stretch in the calves.

I agree. Plus, once you get past those "p*ssy-plates", it just isn't safe....Unrack the weight, then try and step on those boards?
