Third set always sux? Why?
Whenever I workout, it seems what ever exercise I do, the third set out of four always sucks. Like today, doing DB bench. I did 12 warm up. Went up 10#. Did 10 no prob. Third set, up 5#. Only got three! It felt really bad. Fourth set up another 5#. Got 5.
Many of my sets are like that. The third set is just miserable. But the next set whether or not I add weight (which I usually do) I almost always better.

Are you giving plenty of time between the sets?

Is your rest time the same throughout? Usually, the first two sets have a faster rest in between sets (90 seconds) The third is heavier and it takes me 2.5 to 3 minutes. Try resting longer and see if that helps.

Rest is not an issue....at least 90 sec and more often 2-2.5 mins.

...and I don't rest more after the third set than after the second. I try to keep it consistent.

If rest time isn't the issue, then it's will power. I'm sure you'll disagree, but that's the only explanation that makes sense. If you can't hit 5 reps on your third, but can on the fourth and rest time is constant, then that's what I see is the problem. Do you have a spotter there? Usually when I sling up a ton of weight, having a spotter there usually makes me more confident to hit a few more.

It's gotta be something in my head. There's a lot of times when I think I'm only gonna get 1 or 2 on the fourth set and hit 5 or 6 even after the disatrous 3rd set.
I thought about applying some of the max-ot by doing easy warm up sets than a couple acclimatization sets then the workout sets. Maybe the third set is really an acclimitization set, and the fourth I really ready for the weight.
Don't count the third set. Just add another after your fourth. This happens to me alot where midway I have a louse lift. Then I up the weight and have a better set. I just do another one after that and it's all good.

I was just thinking along those lines Doc. If I have four sets to perform, I always think, "Shit, two more to go." So, try elliminating that fourth set altogether instead and go for an all out three heavy. At least that way after pushing out two, you think only one more to go.

I rarely think "Shit, two more to go." If it was up to me, and if I could keep up the intensity, I'd be doing five six sets of five or six exercises per body part. I just like being in the gym and lifting.
Now that I think about it, I really do believe it's an acclimation thing, along with a bit of a mind fuck. Since my third sets have been shitty in the past, I think they're gonna be shitty all the time.
Today I really surprised myself by thowing those 80's up. It felt really good.
Well, tomorrow is back day. I'm gonna try to rip out some pullups. (I suck at them!) Well really chin-ups--I guess pull-ups are w/ palms facing you. I use the assisted machine. Each week I try to use less weight.
