Along with slow progression. You could try doing variations of the deadlift that put less stress on the area. Maybe something like Rack Pulls from a height that you feel comfortable with. Not sure if this applicable with a hernia, but it helped me take a lot of extra stress out of deadlifts when I had an injury.
