Depends, as mentioned, on the degree of microtearing damage inflicted during your workout and the degree of cortisol induction (which kickstarts the inflammatory and pain response).

If you are doing fewer sets, but higher resistance (and therefor fewer reps), you probably have a little less loading as well.

Make sure you are really concentrating on each movement and that form isn't being sacrificed by your jump in resistance.

Also, make sure that you're not compromising working certain muscle groups because others are forced to provide ancillary action (I see this all the time in two moves: rear delts and lat pulls).
