Very good post. I too was making the huge mistake of following the "muscle mag" routines of one body part/day. For the past year or so, I've done UD2, HST, and Lyle MacDonald's Bulking Routine (upper/lower splits) and have had far superior results using these methods. Granted I made progress before using these training protocols, but my results were expedited when I got back to basics (heavy, compound movements) and focused on:
1. Adequate frequency and intensity of training.
2. Progressive overload

I was glad to see that you cited the study whereby protein synthesis and gene expression decreased within 36 hrs. following a weight training bout. This is what I tell my clients, in addition to, putting the muscle mags down. They are amazed by the results that they get.
All too often, people in the gym look the same day in and day out. Now I know that the cause can be attributed to many factors, one of which is inherently diet, but another is poor training methods. When people actually make progress, it is so abnormal that most attribute the progress to steriods, supplements, etc. I have seen this first hand.
