The scarring caused by infection may cause partial or total blockage of the large intestine. When this happens, the colon is unable to move bowel contents normally. When the obstruction totally blocks the intestine, emergency surgery is necessary. Partial blockage is not an emergency, so the surgery to correct it can be planned.
Total blockage sounds about right. I had an x-ray done and it looked pretty grim. The doc told me that if I started supplementing fiber with the RDA, it was a BAD thing given my state of blockage. He said that the fiber would act as cement and would only increase the blockage. He said to wait until it clears, then supplement the fiber. If I remember correctly, I think I took some Ex-Lax and prayed a lot. An hour after I dosed myself, hell finally froze over and big daddy gave birth to a Saint..

Most people with diverticulosis never have any discomfort or symptoms.
Lucky them. I was in very bad pain. I remember driving to work and every bump I hit on the I-405 felt like a dagger. For me, it felt like my whole stomach/intestines were bloated to full capacity, and the pain I'll describe as a bad cramp just below the naval that never goes away. Fucking nightmare.

Obviously, I got a bad case mainly from processed foods and eating a megaton of protein (mostly whole foods along with 3 shakes per day). I remember my carbs and consequently fiber being very low for about a week. That's all it takes.

Since then, I've always supplemented fiber a la Metamucil and never had a problem since. I add a tablespoon of the orange flavor along with my protein shakes which tastes awesome. An extra added benefit of supplementing some extra fiber with your nighttime shake is that it'll slow down the rate of digestion of the protein for an extended release.
