No one is saying that the compound lifts have to be big. You don't need to start off deadlifing 350 lbs or benching 250.

I you want to put on weight: eat!

Read that, and it'll help you put on some pounds.

Remember: you grow OUT of the gym, not IN the gym. So a lot of it has to do with rest and diet.
