I agree that you should eat less in increments but a "starvation diet" is still a starvation diet no matter how slow you drop the calories. You are not going to fool you body for long if at all and you are cetainly not going to fool it into preserving muscle. So there is a limit to how low you should drop calories if you don't want your body to hoard fat, eat muscle, and put it all back on plus some more as soon as you eat normal again.
