I was gonna put stuff on this in the injuries thread but I never did.

Everyone is half right. It CAN progress to stress fractures which would be on the severe end of the spectrum. Yes it is overuse or upping the intensity or duration of training to quickly. AND it can be helped along by bad shoes, by the shape of the arch or the running form, such as rolling the foot inwards too much. Running on hard surfaces like concrete (don't if you can help it).

But what you said about the muscles feeling tight is a big part of it. The small muscles become completeley fatigued and more and more force is trasnfered to the fascia of the bone and then to the bone itself, causing inflammation and pain. This pain does not mean you have a fracture but if training continues and intensifies without recovery and allowing the muscles to strengthen the the forces on the bone can lead to fracture.

Google Shin Splints and you'll find plenty. You'll basically need to bring it down a notch andj build it back up. Ice it when it hurts. Examine the way you run. Try to find a forgiving surface (we weren't meant to run of concrete or asphalt). Stretch.

The problem with them is that while usually they go away if you increase your training gradually and get proper rest and recovery it is not always a matter of "rest and heal". It's a matter of inflammation so you can think about it like tendonitis. It doesn't always go away if you wait awhile since the inflammation tends to be self perpetuating. Just sitting around and doing nothing for awhile won't necessarily help if you go right back to the same intensity or duration and don't correct any problems. If you rest the inflammation might go away and you might heal but if you rest too long any gain in fitness could easily slip away putting you right back at square one.

If you act sanctimonious I will just list out your logical fallacies until you get pissed off and spew blasphemous remarks.
