Perhaps squats on the smith machine might be a good alternative if you are having problems with your shoulder at least until you become accustom to regular squats. I would think this would help you go heavier because you would have more confidence and a chance to not have to put so much focus on your shoulder, but on your legs (The point of the squat) therefore be able to lift more without worrying
