1) Hell yeah. I put my training partners through hell, absolute fucking hell. No missed sessions, no pussy weights, no skipping the last set of squats, no "why are we doing this, I don't like these", just heavy weights and pain with me. Some have broken under the pressure but the ones that aren't little girls have seen unreal gains.
2) For the most part. Sometimes it loosens up.
