The upper part that your friends say is your rib cage is the upper part of the rectus abdominus, i.e. it's insertion point which is the cartiliges of the fifth, sixth, and seventh ribs, called the costal cartilages 5-7. It's supposed to connect also to the xyphoid process which is part of the sternum but I'm not sure if this is always the case or just a variation.

So, in other words, your sternum and ribcage is under there but you are right and your friends are wrong. Some people just have more or less separation up there.
