yes this is common. it's called lifting to your potential. If you can lift 325, then doing sets of 135 isn't going to do crap unless you're doing sets of 20, but then you're working in the lactic acid realm. For the core, any and all ab work, hyper extensions for the lower back, I find lunges are very useful, and some of the exercises that you can do seated you should do standing a big one is standing shoulder press.
