That sounds quite similar to what they tell kids in gym class with regards to smoking and drugs. First you smoke cigarettes, then you move onto weed then you do heroine. I don't buy that personally. In the end it boils down to the individual but I don't like the idea that they generalize someone's behaviour as progressively heading towards the extreme end of the spectrum. Come on, coffee to roids, or cigarettes to crack cocaine.
It may be true in some cases, but not many.
