To expand a little on the first last paragraph..a few tidbits from Practical Programming:

There are over 300 different certifications available. California alone has over 40 organizations offering some type of credential.

MOST of these aren't worth the paper they are written on. Some of them all you have to do is cut a check and you get your "certification". Others you only need to take an online course or online test or just doing it at home and getting a certification without ever having been examed. Others you just go to a weekend workshop. No other background or prerequisite qualifications are involved.

The book mentions as the best currently available:

NSCA (National Strength and Conditioning Association) [I think their certification is CSCS...certified strength and conditioning specialist.

The USAW (USA Weightlifting)

And ACSM for exercise in general.

I'm not so sure the ISSA that the article mentions is a great choice. They could be better than some of the others...but background qualifications are not mentioned and as far as I know you just have to take their course and pass their test (and be certified in CPR). I know they've been around since 1988 and they offer a number of different certifications. I haven't heard anything bad about it but in general the problem is that it's all about THEIR principals and THEIR guidelines rather than having a well rounded background and education that takes into account different schools of thought. I don't really know though. They don't like squatting in the smith machine so that's a point from me

The NASM (National Academy of Sports Medicine) is another certification that is widely recognized. Like the NCSA they claimed to be certified by the NCCA.

If you act sanctimonious I will just list out your logical fallacies until you get pissed off and spew blasphemous remarks.
