Most likely you're lower back pains and cramps are a result of relative weakness of other parts of your core and/or posterior chain. It seems to be the most common complaint, in terms of general discomfort, for someone doing Rippetoe. It should get better as you back becomes used to the workload and as other parts of your body become stronger.

Also, if there is a flexiblility issue in the hams, glute, lower back, or hip flexors, this could lead to or aggravate this kind of discomfort.
